World Wrestling Championships 1962

The 1962 Wrestling World Championships took place in Toledo from June 21 to 27, 1962 . It was wrestled in both Greco-Roman and free styles . The wrestlers were divided into eight weight classes.

Greco-Roman

The Greco-Roman style competitions took place from June 25 to June 27, 1962. The wrestlers from the Soviet Union , Hungary and Turkey formed an almost unbreakable superiority. Only Masamitsu Ichiguchi ( Japan ) defeated Amari Egadze (Soviet Union) and thus became world champion. The wrestlers from the Soviet Union secured medals in seven of the eight competitions. Only Wladimir Rosin could not place himself in the medal ranks with a fourth place in the weight class -70 kg.

Freestyle

The freestyle competitions took place from June 21 to 23, 1962. The wrestlers from the Soviet Union also proved their strength in free style : with three gold and one silver medal they came first, closely followed by the Iranians , who each won two gold and silver medals. The Japanese came third with one gold, two silver and one bronze medal. The most interesting fight took place in the 97kg weight class when two of the greatest freestyle wrestlers of all time, Gholamreza Takhti (Iran) and Alexander Medved (Soviet Union), faced each other. Medved won this fight and became world champion for the first time. The German Wilfried Dietrich also won a bronze medal in freestyle.
