Career

Ali Aliyev grew up in Dagestan where she started as a teenager with the rings . Because of his great talent he was delegated to the wrestling center in Makhachkala and trained there to become a world class wrestler in free style. Aliyev did not only devote his time to wrestling, he was one of the few Soviet wrestlers who continued his professional training, studied medicine and became a doctor during his time as an active wrestler.

In 1959 he caused a sensation for the first time when he was the flyweight champion in the II. People's Spartakiad of the USSR before Georgi Sajadow and Ivan Abdulayev. He was then used in the flyweight championship in Tehran in 1959 , won five fights and fought against Ahmet Bilek from Turkey in a draw, which was enough to win the title.

He started as a favorite at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , but suffered two defeats in the decisive fights against Elliott Simmons from the USA a . Mohammad Ebrahim Seifpour from Iran and ended up in 6th place.

In 1961 Aliyev was unbeatable at the World Cup in Yokohama and won his second world title with six wins. He won it u. a. also about the German master Paul Neff from Schifferstadt , who gave Aliyev only one point win. At the 1962 World Cup in Toledo / USA , Aliyev won his third flyweight world title. Only Noriyuki Harada from Japan and Rolf Lacour from Köllerbach managed to keep up with him, but both clearly lost on points against Aliyev.

Ali Aliyev suffered a surprising defeat at the 1963 World Cup in Sofia from Turkey's Cemal Yanılmaz . Since Yanılmaz also won his other fights, Aliyev only got the silver medal. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , Aliyev fared like four years ago in Rome . He was again without a medal and came in 4th place. A defeat against the outstanding Japanese Yoshikatsu Yoshida at this tournament gave him this unsatisfactory result.

In 1965, Aliyev was not at the start of any international championships. He switched to bantamweight and won his fourth world title at the World Cup in Toledo / USA, to which he added his fifth at the 1967 World Cup in New Delhi . In New Delhi, the Indian Bishambar Singh wrested a draw from him, and Aliyev won the remaining five fights that he had to contest.

In 1968 he tried to win an Olympic medal for the third time in Mexico City and for the third time the five-time world champion failed. He lost in a preliminary round against the US-American Donald Behm and also wrestled twice with only a draw, which earned him the thankless 4th place again.

After Ali Aliyev took an international break in 1969, he tried a comeback at the World Cup in Edmonton in 1970 , but it did not succeed. He lost both fights he played and ended up in 11th place.

He then ended his wrestling career and became a successful wrestler trainer in Makhachkala. In September 2007 he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
