Paul Neff (wrestler)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Neff (born January 10, 1938 in Schifferstadt ) is a former German wrestler . He was two-time vice European champion.

Career

Paul Neff began as a child in the Palatinate Ringer stronghold Schifferstadt with the rings . He was a teammate and friend of Wilfried Dietrich , the most successful Schifferstadt wrestler of all time. Neff was trained in Schifferstadt by Albert Ferber and Jakob Schelhorn to be an excellent wrestler in the free style and in the Greco-Roman style, who later preferred the free style in his international competitions. In 1954 and 1955 he was the German runner-up among the youth (classes up to 45 kg or 50 kg body weight). In 1958 he was the first German champion in the senior flyweight, free style, to which he added 17 other German championship titles in the course of his career.

1957 Neff was at the World Championships in Istanbul flyweight, free style, with a good 6th place its debut in international Ringer championships. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , Neff narrowly missed a medal with fourth place after three wins and two defeats against Masayuki Matsubara from Japan and Ahmet Bilek from Turkey , who won silver and gold in the final round. Neff also took 4th place at the 1961 World Cup in Yokohama in flyweight, free style.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , things didn't go so well for Neff, because he lost both of his fights, dropped out after the second round and ended up in 16th place. At the World Championships in Manchester in 1965 he first won three before he lost in the 4th round against László Ölveti from Hungary and came in 6th place.

In 1966 Neff managed to win the first medal at an international championship at the European championship in Karlsruhe . He achieved four flyweight victories, including one over the Soviet starter Ramazan Samedow. In the final against the Turkish Mehmet Esenceli Neff lost just under points and thus won the silver medal.

Neff also showed very good performances at the European Championships in 1967 in Istanbul . In the witches' cauldron there, he managed a clear win on points over defending champion Mehmut Esenceli and fought against Jürgen Kalkowski from the GDR and Baju Baew from Bulgaria . Due to a very unfortunate constellation, the top wrestlers defeated each other, Neff only came in the thankless 4th place, while the Esenceli he defeated even became European champion again. At the world championship of the same year in New Delhi , Neff was on his way to a medal through victories over European champion Esenceli and runner-up European champion Banju Baew, but lost in the 5th round to the eventual world champion Oh Jung-Yong from North Korea and came in 5th . Space.

At the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 Neff got three wins before he had to retire after a draw with Mehmet Esenceli by a defeat against the Mongols Süchbaataryn Sürendschaw and finished in 7th place.

1968 Neff was again vice European champion in Skopje . On the way he defeated the Soviet starter Sekriladze and won again against Mehmet Esenceli, while he lost just on points in the final against his old competitor Banju Baew.

With two 5th places at the World Championships in Mar del Plata in the Greco-Roman style and in the free style in bantamweight and a 6th place in the World Championships in Edmonton in 1971 in the free style in flyweight Neff completed his successful career.

With his club, VfK Schifferstadt, Paul Neff won the German team championship four times between 1959 and 1971. After finishing his active wrestling career, Neff worked for VfK Schifferstadt for years as a successful coach.
