Career
Burhan Bozkurt is said to have been born in Istanbul on August 20, 1934, according to another source . He started wrestling at the Kasimpascha Istanbul Sports Club when he was 15 . He preferred the Greco-Roman style, but occasionally struggled in the free style. He learned the profession of electric welder. He was also a talented musician from a young age who even appeared on Turkish radio. In 1955 he was the first Turkish champion in flyweight wrestling (Greco-Roman style). In the course of his career he was a total of eleven times Turkish master in both styles. His main competitors in Turkey were Ahmet Bilek , Hüseyin Akbaş and Ali Egribas , against whom he found it very difficult to prevail.
Burhan Bozkurt missed the qualification for the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 because he suffered a broken rib shortly before the decisive competitions. After that he was hired by the Turkish merchant navy and was therefore hardly able to train anymore. In 1958 he went to the United States and worked as a window cleaner in New York . He started wrestling again there and appeared on the international wrestling mat for the first time in 1959 when he took first place in the free style in flyweight at the 1959 Balkan Games , which took place in Romania . Then he worked again in New York. In 1960 he wanted to travel back to Turkey on an ocean ship to qualify for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . However, the ship suffered an average so that he could not return to Turkey in time. He was therefore unable to take part in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.
In 1961 he started at the World Championships in Yokohama in Greco-Roman style and won a bronze flyweight medal with three wins . He achieved the same success at the 1962 World Cup in Toledo (Ohio) . In 1964 he was also used at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in flyweight. In Greco-Roman In style he only got one victory there and ended up in 8th place.
In 1961 Burhan Bozkurt went to the Federal Republic of Germany , wrestled for KV Untertürkheim and worked on the assembly line at Daimler-Benz. After only a year he moved to SV Einigkeit Aschaffenburg-Damm . With this club he became German team champions in 1963 and 1964.
