Hüseyin Akbaş (* 1933 in Almus , Tokat ; † February 15, 1989 ) was a Turkish wrestler . He was a two-time Olympic medalist and a four-time world champion .

Career

Hüseyin Akbaş grew up in the small town of Tokat in Asia Minor and began playing the Turkish national sport of oil wrestling at an early age . Later he also dealt with Olympic wrestling and developed into an excellent wrestler in both styles, but who preferred the free style. He moved to Ankara , which later earned him the nickname "Lion of Ankara" in the Turkish press, and was already a member of the Turkish national wrestling team at the age of 20. He made his debut on the international wrestling mat at the 1954 World Cup in Tokyo , where he immediately became world champion in free style in flyweight with five wins and also defeated the Japanese title favorite Yushu Kitano .

In 1955 he started at the World Championships in Karlsruhe in the Greco-Roman style and won the bronze medal. Nail Garajew from the Soviet Union and Ignazio Fabra from Italy defeated him in this style.

At the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne , he was considered a flyweight favorite in free style. But after four wins against the Iranian Mohammad Ali Khojastepour he suffered a surprising defeat and only won the bronze medal.

Between the Olympic Games in 1956 and 1960, world championships were held in Istanbul in 1957 and in Tehran in 1959 . Hüseyin had reached the zenith of his performance at both events and won both world championship titles unbeaten in bantamweight. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he was therefore again a favorite. But he had two pitch-black days of competition in Rome, only fought once and lost two fights and ended up in 14th place, which is indisputable for him.

Hüseyin did not give up, won the bronze medal at the bantamweight championship in Yokohama in 1961 and became world champion in free style for the fourth time in 1962 in Toledo / USA . At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 he was shortly before the Olympic victory, but then lost in a ravishing fight to the Japanese Yōjirō Uetake , who had been preparing for this event for four years in the United States, just on points.

At the World Championships in Manchester in 1965 he missed the medal ranks with a 4th place and then did not take part in the World Championships or the Olympic Games.

Hüseyin Akbaş was also well known in German wrestling circles. He belonged to a Turkish selection that was on a competitive tour in West Germany in 1959. Hüseyin competed four times and shouldered his German opponents Fritz Schrader from Hörde, Siegfried Wagner from Kornwestheim , Ewald Tauer from Munich and Klaus Derichs from Bonn in a short time.

In 1967 he ended his international wrestling career and was then wrestling coach in Tokat. In September 2011, he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
