Edvin Vesterby (born October 23, 1927 in Riguldi , Noarootsi , Estonia ) is a former Swedish wrestler of Estonian descent. He was a silver medalist at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne .

Career

Edvin Vesterby grew up in Stockholm as the son of parents from Estonia . There he began as a teenager in 1946 with Djurgårdens IF with the wrestling. He was very talented and had fought his way into the top Swedish wrestling class in both styles by the early 1950s. In 1951 he became the first Swedish master in the free style and in 1955 in the Greco-Roman style. His international career began in 1951 at the World Free Style Championships in Helsinki . There he lost in bantamweight after two points wins in the third round against the Iranian Mohammad Mehdi Yaghoubi and had to be satisfied with the ungrateful fourth place.

He took the same place at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki . Here, too, he competed in free style in bantamweight, won three fights and lost to the Turkish Cemil Sarıbacak and the all surprising Japanese Shohachi Ishii , who became Olympic champion .

Vesterby also landed 4th at the 1955 World Cup in Karlsruhe , this time in the Greco-Roman style. After three wins, he was thrown out of the race by the eventual world champion Vladimir Stashkevich from the Soviet Union.

Vesterby finally won the well-deserved medal at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne in Greco-Roman style. After three wins he lost against Dinko Petrow from Bulgaria and Konstantin Wyrupajew from the Soviet Union, but Petrow was eliminated early, so that Vesterby won the silver medal behind Vyrupayev.

At the 1955 World Championships in Budapest Vesterby achieved a good 5th place, and at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome in the Greco-Roman style in bantamweight, he again came 4th. Finally, Edvin Vesterby competed in both styles again in 1962 in Toledo / USA and came in 6th place in free style and 14th place in the Greco-Roman style after two defeats in the first two rounds.

Then he finished his international wrestling race. Edvin Vesterby, an electrician by profession, then made himself available to his parent club as a trainer in the youth field for many years.
