Bernard Knitter (born February 28, 1938 ) is a former Polish wrestler . He was a bronze medal winner at the 1965 World Championships .

Career

Bernard Knitter grew up in Gdansk and attended a technical college in Krakow , where he was trained as an engineer. In 1950 he began wrestling as a teenager in Gdansk. His first coach at Spójnia Gdańsk was Jan Majewicz. In the course of his career he also wrestled for the clubs Siła Mysłowice , Górnik Wesoła and Zagłębie Wałbrzych . In 1957 he was the first Polish flyweight champion in free style . In 1959 he switched to the Greco-Roman style and became Polish bantamweight champion in the same year.

In 1960 Bernard qualified for the Olympic Games in Rome . He got there up to the 5th round and after defeats against Gilberto Gramellini from Italy a . Ion Cernea from Romania took 7th place. From 1961 to 1964 he represented Poland at the World Championships in Yokohama , Toledo / USA and Helsingborg and the Olympic Games in Tokyo . He always started in the bantamweight division. He delivered a number of good fights, but could only take places between 5 (1961) and 11 (1964). In 1961 he defeated the Soviet top wrestler Vladlen Trostjanski on points as part of a city battle between Warsaw and Moscow .

In 1965 he achieved the greatest success of his career at the World Championships in Tampere . He deservedly won the bronze medal there, which he just missed at the 1966 World Championships in Toledo / USA with a 4th place.

Bernard Knitter completed his career with two starts at the European Championships in 1967 and 1968, where he started in featherweight. He then worked for "Górnik" Wesoła and "Zagłębie" Wałbrzych as a trainer.
