Lothar Schneider (born October 3, 1939 in Dessau ; † March 15, 2019 there ) was a German wrestler .
Career
Lothar Schneider grew up in Dessau and started wrestling there. After he had become GDR youth champion (Spartakiadesieger) in wrestling several times, he was delegated to SC Lokomotive Leipzig because of his talent , whose wrestling section was transferred to SC Leipzig in 1963 . There he made rapid progress and prevailed in 1964 in the domestic German qualification for the Olympic Games in featherweight, Greco-Roman style. At the Olympic Games, his first start in an international championship, he still had to learn the hard way, but a year later he was third at the World Championships in Tampere / Finland . An excellent fourth place at the European Championships in Essen in 1966 rounded off this good result. In the following years he could not place himself as far up front, but delivered excellent fights against such world class wrestlers as Simion Popescu , Branislav Martinović , Martti Laakso and Roman Rurua .
In 1969 he ended his international career and returned to the Dessau Wrestling Club, where he became section leader and trainer. In 1995 he became 1st chairman of the newly founded 1st Dessau Wrestling Club. Lothar Schneider was a steel caster by profession, later an engineer for railway technology and finally a vocational school teacher.
He died in March 2019 after a serious illness.
