Historic region

Together with the districts of Leider and Nilkheim of the city of Aschaffenburg, the district of Dorndiel of the city of Großumstadt, the city of Obernburg and the communities of Großwallstadt and Mömlingen, the districts of Radheim and Mosbach of the community of Schaafheim, the market of Großostheim and the market of Stockstadt, the community of Niedernberg forms the historical Bachgau region .

Expansion of the municipal area

The northern and western municipal area is largely in the water protection area around the Aschaffenburg waterworks. A small part is located as the former landing site of the Niedernberger ferry on the right bank of the Main opposite the town center. This means that the Niedernberg municipality is traversed by the Main at its edge. About half of the municipal area is west of federal highway 469 .

geology

Niedernberg belongs to both the core landscape of the Lower Main Plain and the steeply sloping mountain edge zone of the Odenwald . Therefore, the district has great differences in height. This corresponds to the structure of the soil, which is mainly made up of sand and loamy layers over the entire flat area . In the west there are also layers of clay, which shortly afterwards change into red sandstone .

From the middle of the 20th century in particular, large-scale gravel mining was carried out.

Natural events

Niedernberg has always had to struggle with winter floods , which affect the lower-lying properties on the Main. Since drift ice and ice drift could be very dangerous during winter floods on the formerly unregulated and undeveloped Main, an ice breaker was built in 1559 at the southeast end of the fortification to break up larger ice floes. The rounded structure, which presumably was preceded by a wooden ice buck upstream, is said not to have had the desired effect.

A devastating flood reached Niedernberg during the melting of the snow in February 1784, when the water was over four feet high in the church. The masses of water tore away ships, huts and stables, some with tethered animals (cf. flood 1784 ).

climate

With an annual mean temperature of over 9 degrees Celsius, Niedernberg is one of the warmest areas in Germany. This is favored by the protective, wooded mountain ranges of the Spessart and the Odenwald.

history

The oldest finds, which indicate human life in the Niedernberger district, date from the Neolithic . Radical changes in the landscape went hand in hand with Roman rule at the turn of the ages. In the first century of our era, the Roman Empire reached as far as the Main. To secure their imperial border, Roman troops built forts at strategically important places .

Marking of the northern side gate of the Roman fort in today's pavement

The origin of Niedernberg goes back to such a Roman fort, built between 83 and 150 AD on the so-called wet Limes , which represented the eastern border of the empire (see Niedernberg Fort ). The 144 × 135 meter fort was oriented to the east, towards the Main. Although it was built over, the ground plan of today's town center still goes back to the road system of the fort, Hauptstrasse and Kirchgasse coincide with the former camp roads. Niedernberg was the location of the approximately 500-strong cohort Cohors I Ligurum et Hispanorum , which had been recruited in northern Italy and Spain.

Roman fountain mask (replica)

Interesting finds such as the Marcellus stone or a burial ground discovered in 1963 provide information about the life of the Romans stationed in Niedernberg. In 1964, a bronze fountain mask was found during construction work in the main street, which is the only original discovered north of the Alps . The mask is the showpiece of the Abbey Museum in Aschaffenburg and is one of the extremely rare items on loan at Roman exhibitions.

The first documented mention of Niedernberg is dated to 1095. At that time, "Diemar von Niderenburc" bequeathed half a hube of land from his property in Pfungstadt to the Lorsch Monastery on Bergstrasse for the maintenance of its subsidiary Steinbach in the Odenwald .

As early as 1340, the Niedernberg Chapel, from which, according to general knowledge, today's parish church St. Cyriakus emerged, was given small legacies. Both the tower and the "old choir" from 1461 have been preserved. Comprehensive renovation and expansion measures were carried out under Pastor Seubert in 1897 and 1931. On the south side of the church tower, around 1822, the grave slab of the Landschöffen Michael Groß, who, according to legend, saved Niedernberg from destruction by the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War , thanks to his courage .

Former place of execution

To the north-west of today's village area, at the so-called Tannenwäldchen, was the execution site of Cent Bachgau, to which Niedernberg belonged , until the end of the 18th century . The Centgericht itself met in Großostheim , from where the delinquents began their last walk over the Galgenweg to the place of execution.

Until the 19th century, Niedernberg was surrounded by a fortified village wall, some of which have been preserved along the Turmgasse and the back wall. However, it could not protect the inhabitants from the troops passing through. During the Thirty Years' War, the population decreased to almost a tenth of its previous level.

Many citizens left their homes in the 19th century due to housing restrictions, poor harvests and social hardship and emigrated to the USA. Only when the industrial production of men's outerwear was established in Aschaffenburg and the surrounding area at the end of the century did a certain degree of prosperity arise. In order to be prepared for emergency situations, agriculture was also retained. This lasted until the 1970s.

At the end of the Old Kingdom , Niedernberg belonged to the city and district bailiwick of Obernburg and Großostheim in the Vizedomamt Aschaffenburg of the Electorate of Mainz . In 1803, Niedernberg came to the newly formed Principality of Aschaffenburg with the Vizedomamt Aschaffenburg , which became part of the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt in 1810 . In the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, Niedernberg belonged as Mairie to the Obernburg district mairie of the Aschaffenburg department and had 680 inhabitants with 129 fireplaces.

As a result of the treaties of Paris, Niedernberg fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814 and belonged to the Obernburg district court from October 1, 1814 .

As a political municipality, Niedernberg emerged as part of the administrative reforms in Bavaria with the municipal edict of 1818.

In 1862, the Obernburg district office was formed through the merger of the Obernburg and Klingenberg regional courts , with Niedernberg located on its administrative territory. As everywhere in the German Reich , the term district was introduced in 1939. Niedernberg was one of the 35 communities in the district of Obernburg am Main (license plate OBB ). With the dissolution of the district of Obernburg, Niedernberg became part of the newly formed district of Miltenberg (license plate MIL ).

From an ecclesiastical perspective, Niedernberg belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz from the early 8th century until secularization in 1803 . After that, Niedernberg was part of the diocese of Regensburg with its Archbishop Karl Theodor von Dalberg until 1820 . Niedernberg has only been part of the Würzburg diocese since 1821 .

The first construction phase of the "Tafeläcker" construction area

For many centuries, Niedernberg lay on the Main waterway and on the Geleitstrasse, which led from Nuremberg via Würzburg, Miltenberg and Seligenstadt to Frankfurt am Main and which was straightened and expanded to form the Chaussee in the 18th century (so-called Long Towel). Nevertheless, agriculture and home tailoring dominated the picture until the 1960s. With the further expansion of the Long Towel to the district road and from the 1970s on to the B 469, a strong structural reorientation towards the industrialist followed, beginning with increased gravel mining and the settlement of the metal processing company later Wanzke AG in 1970. Through the direct motorway connection guaranteed via the B 469 the Rhine-Main area , the provision of a large industrial and commercial area and the Main Bridge completed in 2001 in the southern district area, the settlement of further commercial enterprises was favored.

Niedernberg suffered a setback in 2002 with the bankruptcy of the listed company m + s Elektronik AG, which had long been a model company . Of a total of 1,800 dismissed employees, 600 lost their jobs at the Niedernberg site alone. The decline of the company due to the sudden termination of business loans despite positive reports and a good order situation resulted in extensive media reports; an episode of the WDR series die story with the title “bank secrets” was produced and broadcast several times on German television.

The Tafeläcker construction area has been set up in four sections since the 2000s , with building sites for 200 apartments to be created here.

The municipality Niederberghaus was Decree of August 3, 1959 by the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior according to Art. 4, para. 1, sentence 2, the Gemeindeordnung given consent for guiding a municipal coat of arms.

The municipal coat of arms shows a crenellated golden gate on a red background , while the silver Mainz wheel continues to float in the archway . The design of the coat of arms was made by Friedrich Merzbach from Munich.

In terms of content, the emblem can be explained as follows: The historical fact that Niedernberg's beginnings go back to a Roman fort is expressed in the coat of arms by the crenellated castle gate. The Mainz wheel is intended to commemorate the territorial affiliation of today's municipality to the Archbishopric Kurmainz , which was confirmed in 1292 .

Town twinning

A friendly relationship developed from a sporting encounter in the north French city of Santes in 1969, which led to the signing of the partnership certificate between Santes and Niedernberg on May 3, 1975. In this way, both communities want to make a contribution to international understanding.

In the following, the relationships were steadily expanded and strengthened through mutual visits, since 1979 there have been annual student exchanges between the two communities. Special exhibitions with changing themes are presented on the occasion of the so-called museum cafés and on the open day on Notch Sunday.

tourism

The Seehotel on the former surf lake

Despite numerous offers of nature, recreation, sport and leisure activities, Niedernberg is not a classic tourism community. In the summer of 2003, 7115 overnight stays were recorded in Niedernberg (this corresponds to 6th place in the district comparison), mainly by business travelers. The average length of stay was only 1.4 days.

Overnight accommodation in Niedernberg is offered by the Seehotel, the Café Reinhard equipped with guest rooms, the basket house in rooms from the 18th century and the boarding house, which is mainly aimed at long-term guests .

According to the IHK site report, the implementation of the plans to activate part of the Niedernberg Lake District for leisure and recreational purposes would trigger far-reaching positive impulses for tourism in Niedernberg.

West of the federal highway 469 between Großostheim and Niedernberg is the 55 hectare 18-hole championship course Golfpark Rosenhof, which should initially be located on both the Niedernberger and Großostheim districts, but was completely set up on the Niedernberg district after the project was rejected by the Großostheim municipal council.

music

The choral society "Einigkeit" is more well known and has already won various awards and regularly achieves very good results at singing competitions. In the meantime, due to a lack of young talent, attempts were made to break new ground with the young choir “Via Nova”, which is generally geared towards modern, often English-language vocal pieces. In 2005, however, due to renewed casting problems, the two groups were merged to form today's choral society "Via Nova Unity".

The music corps of the Niedernberg volunteer fire brigade, which has existed since 1957. V. has over 70 active members, including a large number of young people. This is not least due to the extensive on-site promotion of young talent in the “Musicum”, which opened in 1999. Furthermore, the music corps has maintained friendly contacts with the music association from Goßmannsdorf since 1985 .

Buildings

The St. Cyriakus Church with its oldest surviving parts from 1461 is the Catholic church in Niedernberg to this day. The bell tower with its sandstone madonna , also from 1461, is adorned with a pointed stone helmet, the so-called "old choir" is designed in the same style and is of Gothic origin with Rhenish characteristics.

In the "Hans-Herrmann-Halle", completed in 1988, many sports clubs hold their training and competitions. Concerts, larger gatherings and private celebrations take place here mainly on the weekends. In 2005, the multi-purpose hall was extensively renovated, as some serious structural defects in the architecture, which was once celebrated as ultra-modern, led, among other things, to water ingress and unsafe roof structures.

"Long Adam" water tower

The “Langer Adam” water tower (popularly named after the mayor of the time Adam Klement) is a landmark of Niedernberg, which was erected by Hochtief AG in just eleven working days in 1958 . Until the 1820s, Niedernberg only had seven chain wells; it was not until 1834 that these were converted to pump wells. Until the municipality decided in 1859 to dig the wells deeper, there was often a water shortage, especially in dry summers. However, as the canalization of the Main progressed from 1928 onwards , the groundwater rose so much that the well water began to rot. The plan to secure a collective supply with the neighboring communities was never realized due to the outbreak of the Second World War . When typhoid fever became known in 1954 and the health department had to close twelve of the thirteen wells for drinking water after inspections and privately built supply systems were also affected, quick action was required. Construction contracts were distributed in the same year, pipes were laid in the village and the house connections made by 1958. The implemented height of the water tower of 44 meters was made necessary by the fact that the local conditions prevented that - as in the neighboring communities - the required water pressure could have been produced by elevated tanks. The Niedernberg water tower has a constant diameter of 10 meters, the two water tanks made of waterproof reinforced concrete hold 250,000 liters and ensure a water pressure of 3.5 atmospheres in the pipe system. The water tower was painted in the colors brown, yellow and gray during its renovation in 1982. Since then, its appearance has only changed slightly due to the installation of various cell phone antennas.

A road bridge has spanned the Main in the Niedernberg district since 2001 . The river bridge has a span of 150 meters and is characterized by the arrangement of inclined, intersecting hangers, a form of construction rarely used in Germany.

Associations and associations

Measured by the number of inhabitants, there is a high number of clubs and associations in Niedernberg.

In terms of sport, for example, in addition to the traditional fishing club and cycling club , the carrier pigeon club “Reiselust”, the gymnastics club , the DJK , the strength sports club “Germania” and the sailing and surfing club as well as the soccer club SpVgg Niedernberg, there is also a disabled sports group , a tennis club, and bowling club and table football club . The Boule friends play since 2006 Petanque , the Golfpark Rosenhof waiting with a 18-hole golf course on.

There are still local groups of the BRK , the BDKJ , the PSG , the volunteer fire brigade, which had been in existence since 1855, and the KJG .

The history association is of particular importance in Niedernberg due to its diverse activities, the carnival association "NCV Niedernberg eV" is known far beyond the region.

The oldest restaurant that still exists today is the “Zur Gemütlichkeit” inn, which was first licensed in 1875 .

Lake area

The "Seehotel"

The gravel mining in Niedernberg has had consequences with the "Niedernberger Seenplatte": It consists of several large and smaller lakes and can be found in the south of Niedernberg. For a long time, the lake district proved to be a real problem for Niedernberg, as thousands of people beyond the district used the largest lake as an unofficial bathing lake in summer . This led to a catastrophic traffic situation on the MIL 38 county road as visitors parked their cars right on the roadside. Unauthorized parties on the lake led to massive pollution of large parts of the shore area.

In 2004 the decision to build a public bathing beach was passed. The beach was completed for the 2005 bathing season, and an improvement in the situation was soon apparent. The municipality subsequently opened the lake district even more to tourism, as it assumed there was great potential for growth in this area. The Seehotel was a first step in this direction, although it is mainly frequented by business travelers. Several extensions followed from October 2006, most recently in April 2018 a country-style extension was approved, so that the hotel will have more than 100 guest rooms at the end of the same year. With its so-called orangery , a winter garden, various conference rooms, two restaurants, a boathouse on the hotel's own peninsula and a wellness area with an indoor pool and heated outdoor pool, the Seehotel also operates under the nickname Dorf am See .

Swimming lake and leisure facility "HonischBeach"

The public beach, which was opened in 2005, gradually became a leisure facility called HonischBeach with bathing facilities, which has become a popular excursion destination for people from the area from Aschaffenburg to Frankfurt, but also from the Heilbronn-Franconia region . The right next door Silbersee is used by surfers and divers, and there is also a diving school on site.

Others

  • Extensive recreation area in the nearby forest with a barbecue area
  • Marked hiking trails
  • Network of cycle paths in the entire municipal area
  • Pump track , soccer field and skater facility

Personalities

Others

The local name "Honisch" for Niedernberg is well known. This does not go back to the similar-sounding food, as is often assumed, but comes from the earlier pronunciation of the auxiliary verb “haben”. This word alone differs greatly in the dialect of the surrounding communities (Niedernberg: hohn , Großwallstadt: hewwe , Großostheim: haoun ).

Earlier generations in Niedernberg said, instead of “I have”, “mockery”, which is why neighboring communities used the mocking name “Honisch”. Over the years this name has become a “branded item”, especially during the carnival season .

It is precisely this “fifth season of the year” that has always been of great importance in Niedernberg. Even today, the community as a "foolish stronghold" is one of the lower Main and the highlights of the "Honischer Fasenacht" as the two ceremonial meetings , the "royal couple wake up" on Carnival Monday and the "Schlofozuchball" draw people from remote areas of.

Another nickname of the Niedernbergers goes back to the mouse plague of 1822. Many mice were killed at the time, but the Niedernbergers wanted to counter the mouse plague with a more modern, more effective method. The mayor commissioned master locksmith Leonhard Zang to get a sample and then build a tin cat. The resulting "mouse eradication facility" was the reason for the name "Blechern Katz".
