Surname

etymology

It is often wrongly assumed that the name Mönchberg has something to do with a monk and a mountain . But it is made up of the old words Manno and gebûr . The Middle High German word gebûr means houses or buildings. Manno is a very old personal name. Mannogebûr are therefore the houses of Manno .

Earlier spellings

Earlier spellings of the place from various historical maps and documents:

  • 1150 male urns
  • 1250 Mennegebuer
  • 1272 Menigebure
  • 1287 Mengebur
  • 1300 Mangebur
  • 1345 Meingebur
  • 1367 Menegebur
  • 1396 Mengwer
  • 1594 Meingswert
  • 1668 Mönchberg

history

Mönchberg ("Meingswert") in the Spessart map by Paul Pfinzing from 1594 (north is on the right)

It is no longer possible to reconstruct when the site was created. The place name, however, indicates an old Franconian settlement. The place was originally (around 800 AD) a post office on the way from Würzburg via Wertheim to Aschaffenburg. The name Manno Gebur refers to the building of Manno, the first owner of this station. The castle Mennegebühr or Mengeburen founded there is first mentioned in a document in 1215 and the place of the same name in 1250. The place belonged to Kurmainz for around 800 years . In 1401 Mönchberg already had its own parish with its own church . In the Middle Ages authorized Emperor Charles IV. Archbishop Gerlach of Mainz the village , the town charter with its own jurisdiction to give. At the same time Mönchberg got the right to build a city fortification , as well as market rights . The place on the Spessart gained prosperity through forestry and handicrafts . Because of the remote location (away from the trade routes and settlement areas on the Main ), Mönchberg was ultimately unable to develop further, so that the town charter, which today is basically only granted to communities with more than 5000 inhabitants, had to be given up again. The market law , however, remained. After the end of the Electorate of Mainz, Mönchberg was in the Principality of Aschaffenburg from 1803 to 1810 and thus in the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt from 1810 to 1813 . It was not until 1814 that Mönchberg came to the Kingdom of Bavaria . As a result of the wars of liberation against Napoleon Bonaparte following the Vienna Congress in 1814/15 had Bayern's Austrian gains in the Treaty of Munich largely give up again, but got to balance parts of the Palatinate and the Franconian areas around Wuerzburg and Aschaffenburg .

In 1862 the district office of Obernburg was formed, on whose administrative area Mönchberg was located. As everywhere in the German Reich , the term district was introduced in 1939. Mönchberg was now one of the 35 communities in the district of Obernburg am Main . With the dissolution of the district of Obernburg, Mönchberg came to the newly formed district of Miltenberg on July 1, 1972 .

Today the old city wall is still preserved, which can be seen, for example, at the music pavilion in the rose garden. The last remains of the castle, however, were torn down in 1968. The place has numerous medieval buildings and half-timbered houses . One of the oldest wayside shrines on the Lower Main is on the main road . This is dated to the middle of the 15th century and contains a representation of Saint Martin in the shaft , which suggests that Mönchberg belonged to the original parish of St. Martin in Wörth .

The place has a baroque parish church built by master builder Johann Martin Schmitt from Miltenberg . The foundation stone was laid in 1749. The church has baroque furnishings, most of which are in their original state and were supplemented in 1899 by various features.

Leisure and Tourism

Of great importance for the region and a main attraction of the market, is the 1992 renovated and heated outdoor pool - called "Spessartbad". Public tennis courts , a music pavilion and a water treading facility offer further leisure options .

Thanks to its recognition as a climatic health resort and its location in the Spessart, Mönchberg is a popular destination for hikers and tourists . There are 90 km of marked hiking trails in and around Mönchberg.

There are also numerous excursion destinations nearby, such as the Mespelbrunn moated castle , the district town of Miltenberg and the wine town of Klingenberg .

Oddities

The Mönchbergers are known for their compliance with the law. In the past, they repeatedly invoked their old rights (Weisthum of 1396). It was said of the Mönchberg farmers that “they had the code of law hanging on the plow ”. This brought the Mönchbergers the nickname - Ortsneckname "law books". In 1987 a theater group was founded in Mönchberg called "The Law Books".
