history

During the time of the tribal duchies, the place belonged to the Duchy of Franconia . The Teutonic Order was active here early on, in 1263 Röllbach and the patronage of the church were transferred to the Teutonic Order. In 1317 the Teutonic Order, the House of Mergentheim, bought von Röllbach's own people with the consent of the von Hohenlohe nobility. In the 14th century until 1483, Röllbach became the seat of an office of the Teutonic Order with the care of 34 places and four courtyards. In 1862 the district office of Obernburg was formed, on whose administrative area Röllbach was located. As everywhere in the German Reich , the term district was introduced in 1939. Röllbach was now one of the 35 communities in the district of Obernburg am Main . With the dissolution of the district of Obernburg, Röllbach came to the newly formed district of Miltenberg on July 1, 1972 .

Although there were no military targets in Röllbach, the place was attacked by Allied bombers on the night of April 24th to 25th, 1944 . Three residents died, 38 houses were completely destroyed, as well as many other barns and outbuildings. The reason for the attack has not yet been clarified.

Culture and sights

Maria Snow Chapel

There is a legend about a snow miracle that traces the floor plan of the chapel. A miraculous image of Mary and the baby Jesus has been venerated in an oak tree for a long time. In the Thirty Years' War the Swedes invaded Röllbach in 1631 and laid the town and chapel in ruins. During this time, the chapel developed as a pilgrimage destination for many plague processions . Here not only the Mother of God but also St. Rochus was worshiped. In 1680 the chapel was enlarged and rebuilt. Since then the organ has also been built in. Between 1849 and 1850 the chapel was raised and restored from 1902 to 1905. The chapel has had its external appearance since 1986, the interior was last renovated in 1990.

Oddities

The fertile loess soil of the district allowed the field crops grown there to thrive particularly well. In particular, the thick, fat turnips , in the vernacular Dickwurz = Worzel, earned the Röllbachers the nickname / Ortsneckname "Worzelköpp".
