The west wing of the former collegiate chapter house originally consisted of two building parts, erected on the basement (today the museum entrance and behind the outside staircase), probably from the founding time (second half of the 10th century). In the 14th century the eaves part was combined with the gable part (north-west corner) of the Zum Sonnenberg house, the seat of the monastery tavern, and in 1480 it was raised to today's eaves height and provided with a stepped gable . In addition, a terrace with a stone pulpit (pilgrim pulpit) was built. In 1621 and 1720 parts of the complex were rebuilt.

In the basement of the east wing was the Michael's Chapel from the middle of the 13th century, above which the collegiate school was built in 1561.

With the house of the Stiftsschenken in the north and the collegiate church of St. Peter and Alexander in the south, the complex encloses the Romanesque cloister that was built between 1220 and 1275 .

After secularization , the collegiate chapter house of St. Peter and St. Alexander's collegiate monastery (first mentioned in 957) was first the monastery archive and library in 1804, from 1808 the location of the entire primate archives, from 1839 drawing school for the universities, 1848 the seat of the district court. The city museum, founded in 1854, has been located in the former collegiate chapter house since 1861.

After the destruction of the Second World War, the repatriation of the relocated stocks began in 1949. The monastery museum also served as an alternative home for exhibitions of other collections. In 1957 the anniversary exhibition From 1000 Years of the Abbey and City of Aschaffenburg took place. Extensive renovation work was carried out on the buildings between 1985 and 1994.
