The art monuments of the Kingdom of Bavaria - District Office Parsberg

Die Kunstdenkmäler von Bayern , originally Die Kunstdenkmäler des Kingdom Bayern , are a series of art topographical books founded in 1887 for the inventory of the most important art and cultural monuments in Bavaria, including the Palatinate .

Between 1892 and 1972 a total of 112 volumes of the so-called old series were published. After the Second World War , an additional 35 volumes were created as brief inventories . The New Series , begun in 1995, currently comprises six volumes. In addition, twelve building age plans for urban redevelopment have been published. Many of the partial volumes of the old series published before 1945 were a. reprinted by R. Oldenbourg Verlag .

history

Until 1945

In June 1887, the Royal Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior ordered the inventory of Bavarian cultural monuments for church and school matters. Measurement plans , drawings and photographs should supplement the written source material in order to create a “source work based on the objective, not the documented literary side”.

Organizationally, the major project was originally supervised by the General Conservatory of Art Monuments and Antiquities of Bavaria. In 1917 the General Conservatory was renamed the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

The inventory began under the direction of Berthold Riehl and Gustav von Bezold in the administrative district of Upper Bavaria . The first volumes could be completed by 1908. The Bavarian general curator Georg Hager had meanwhile worked out new principles regarding the formal organization and also the deepening of the content of the entire work.

From 1905 the art monuments of the Upper Palatinate were added. 1911 began with the administrative district of Lower Franconia . From 1912 the district of Lower Bavaria was edited. These districts could be completed by 1936. The districts of Upper Franconia , Middle Franconia and Swabia have remained unfinished to the present day . In addition, nine volumes have been published for the formerly Bavarian administrative district Palatinate , which was also not completed.

After 1935 the inventory came to a complete standstill for personnel reasons, especially due to the outbreak of the Second World War.

Since 1945

In the post-war period, attempts were made to cover the areas not yet covered by the publication of the Bavarian Art Monuments series (short inventories). These volumes contain only a few drawings and plans, but no photographic documentation. In addition, important old towns that are particularly endangered by the pressure to renovate, especially Regensburg, were included in the building age plans for urban redevelopment . Since 1985, the list of monuments has been the focus of the inventory, first in overview volumes on government districts, then in individual volumes on districts with the series Monuments in Bavaria .

Large inventories have been resumed since around 1990 , albeit very slowly because of the expansion of the concept of monument to include townhouses and farmhouses as well as technical buildings and the increased scientific demands. In addition to a volume on Günzburg in Swabia, the focus is on a precise recording of the city of Bamberg in twelve volumes so far.

In addition, ensembles and individual monuments such as the city of Landsberg , the Augsburg Cathedral and the Georgensgmünd Jewish Cemetery were republished in a completely new and greatly expanded form in the New Series (previously six volumes).

The art and cultural monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate , into which the Bavarian Palatinate was absorbed in 1946, have been published by the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage of Rhineland-Palatinate since the end of the war .

meaning

Despite the partially outdated state of research and the incomplete nature of the older volumes, the inventories published before 1945 are valuable and indispensable sources on the Bavarian state , art and cultural history up to the present day . Numerous documented cultural monuments were destroyed or removed during the world wars or the post-war period, and ensembles and furnishings were changed.

The image and plan material developed during the inventory forms the basis of the image archive of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and is continuously updated.
