Tilmann Breuer

Tilmann Breuer (born October 13, 1931 in Coburg ) is a German art historian and monument conservator . He was department head in the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation and honorary professor at the Technical University of Munich .

Life

Breuer studied art history, archeology and philosophy at the universities of Marburg, Tübingen and Munich. He received his doctorate in 1957 in Munich on the facade of the Angoulême Cathedral under Hans Sedlmayr and Ernst Buschor . In 1962 he began working at the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments , where he eventually became head of inventory. From 1978 to 1992 he had a teaching position at the Technical University of Munich , where he was appointed honorary professor in 1985 . In 1991 the State Office dedicated a publication to him, and in 1996 he retired.

Breuer was responsible for numerous inventory volumes and brief inventories with a focus on Franconia . He began this work with the partial volumes on the city of Augsburg, the city and district of Memmingen and Kaufbeuren. Another four volumes from his Upper Franconian homeland followed. He wrote the volumes on the city of Bamberg , an often published art guide to Bamberg Cathedral and reworked the Dehio handbook on Franconia. He is one of the most important theorists on the concept of monument in the second half of the 20th century, u. a. by introducing the term monument landscape .
