Hans-Rudolf Meier

Hans-Rudolf Meier (born November 9, 1956 in Zurich ) is a Swiss - German art historian and professor at the University of Weimar .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a laboratory assistant, work in the chemical industry and trade union and political involvement, Hans-Rudolf Meier studied art history , history , medieval archeology and prehistory and early history in Basel , Zurich and Freiburg im Breisgau, licentiate in Basel, where he was then scientific assistant at Art history seminar at the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in 1992 with a thesis on high medieval secular architecture in Sicily and completed his habilitation in art history in 2000. From 1992 to 2000 he was senior assistant at the Institute for Monument Preservation at the ETH Zurich , interrupted in 1996 by a research stay as a member of the Istituto Svizzero in Rome. From 2000 to 2002 he worked on a research project on secular wall painting of the Middle Ages at the Medieval Institute of the Université de Friborg and head of a project of the Swiss National Fund on the grave finds in Basel Minster.

In 2002/03 he was the professor for older art history at the University of Basel, from 2003 to 2007 he was professor for monument studies and applied building research at the Technical University of Dresden and head of the postgraduate master’s course in “Monument Preservation and Urban Development”. In 2008 he accepted the professorship for the preservation of monuments and building research at the Bauhaus University Weimar , where he was Vice-Rector for Research from 2011 to 2012. From 2017 to 2019 he was a member of the University Council of the Bauhaus University Weimar. Since 2016 he has been the deputy spokesman for the DFG Graduate School GRK2227 "Identity and Heritage".

His main research interests are the theory and history of monument preservation, medieval and modern architecture, and the prehistory of medieval archeology.

He is u. a. Member of the Scientific Commission of the German Foundation for Monument Protection , the Scientific Advisory Board of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar , the State Monument Councils of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt (2007–2015), the Commission for Art History of Central Germany at the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig and the Design Advisory Board of the City of Baden -To bathe. From 2008 to 2016 he was 1st chairman of the working group theory and teaching of the preservation of monuments. He is editor of the research on the architectural heritage of the GDR , co-editor of the series Urban Development and Preservation of monuments and together with Winfried Speitkamp and Frank Simon-Ritz publisher of the online publication series Neue Bauhaus lectures . He is also a member of the editorial board of Forum Stadt magazine . Quarterly magazine for urban history, urban sociology, monument preservation and urban development .
