Kulturwarte

The Kulturwarte was a series of booklets that was published at the instigation of the city of Hof and provided information on cultural, local history and art-historical topics.

Scope of the Kulturwarte

The Kulturwarte - (Northeast Upper Franconian) monthly for art and culture appeared as a monthly magazine from 1955 to 1991, that is 36 annual volumes. The publisher was initially the tourist office, later a specially founded association. Hans Hofner made regular contributions and numerous well-known local homeland researchers and art enthusiasts were represented, including Karl Bedal , Herrmann Braun , Tilmann Breuer , Karl Dietel , Max Escher , Claus Henneberg , Reinhard Höllerich , Elisabeth Jäger , Otto Knopf , Hans Seiffert and Friedrich Wilhelm Singer . In addition to the urban area, the contributions also dealt with issues relating to the district , which after the regional reform in Bavaria in 1972 also included the former districts of Naila , Münchberg and Rehau . The district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge was also often represented. In addition to art history topics, the magazine took part in cultural life, including current events at the Hof Theater or exhibitions and portraits of artists, some of whom had come together in the Nordfranken group. With book reviews attention was paid to the new publications e.g. B. the annual volume from the archive for the history of Upper Franconia or the home calendar for the Fichtelgebirge, Franconian Forest and Vogtland . In the 1950s and 1960s, excavations were also carried out, e.g. B. reported on the Waldstein or at Regnitzlosau .

prehistory

The Kulturwarte series has a history. This begins with the newsletter of the Film Club Hof eV in the Association of German Film Clubs , which was published from September 1951. The monthly newspaper Der Ochsenkopf appeared from October 1952, the publisher was the Kulturbund in addition to the Film Club, which also explains the changed and expanded range of contents. Under the Lord Mayor of Hof, Hans Högn , the focus was finally on cultural topics in the north-east Upper Franconian area and the appearance as a culture watchdog from April 1955. Readership and advertising stock were taken over from the series Der Ochsenkopf , but also expanded beyond the Altlandkreis Hof.

Cover pictures

The design of the title page is characteristic of the Kulturwarte magazine series, the motifs of which initially remained unchanged for several years and later also created a recognition value with the same design elements. The first cover by Emil Ressel was in use from 1955 to 1957. The central motifs of the still life are a mask, a violin and a pot full of paintbrushes, which are supposed to embody the various artistic movements. A binding in text form without pictures for the year 1958 was followed by a drawing of a Gothic apostle head from the Regnitzlosau church by artist Max Escher from 1959 to 1966 . From 1967 to 1969 Karl Bedal made a monthly linocut as a cover picture. From 1970 to 1972 a symbolized brush and a book as a two-tone design by Alfred Hertich adorned the cover. In later editions one switched to bindings in alternating colors, which announced the contents of the editions in text form.
