Helmut-Eberhard Paulus (born November 23, 1951 in Erlangen ) is a German administrative lawyer, art historian and monument conservator .

life and work

Paulus studied art history, archeology, religious and intellectual history, as well as law, political science and legal history. He completed his law studies with the first and second state examinations. As a student in Erlangen, he became a member of the Alemannia Leipzig fraternity in 1969 . In 1980 he was awarded the title The Schönborn Palaces in Göllersdorf and Werneck with Bernhard Rupprecht as Dr. phil. PhD in art history as a major at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg .

Paulus then worked at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in Munich. In 1981 he became a freelancer and in 1986 a civil servant at the Regensburg City Monument Protection Authority. From 1987 to 1994 he headed this agency. Paulus was co-organizer and author of the conference volumes of the Regensburg Autumn Symposia on Art History and Monument Preservation . In 1994 he was appointed director of the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation based at Heidecksburg Castle in Rudolstadt . He retired in 2017 and was succeeded by Doris Fischer . Paul lives and works in Regensburg .

Teaching assignments and honorary positions

From 1982 to 1999 Paulus took on lectureships for monument preservation at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg , since 1997 he has also been a lecturer at the Bauhaus University Weimar (chair for building survey and monument preservation ) and since 2001 at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt / Oder. The teaching position at the Institute for Art History at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg since 1999 led to his appointment as honorary professor in 2010 .

Paulus has been a member of the German National Committee of ICOMOS since 1989 and since 1995 a member of the public relations working group of the German National Committee for Monument Protection . From 1997 to 2003 he was deputy chairman, from 2003 to 2009 chairman and since 2009 again deputy chairman of the Working Group of German Castle Administrations . Since 2008 he has been chairman of the Orangeries in Germany working group and since 2010 chairman of Burgenstrasse Thüringen eV , in 2012 he was appointed to the Historical Commission for Thuringia .

Awards

On April 22, 2017, Helmut-Eberhard Paulus was awarded the Great Monument Prize of the German Castle Association . The laudators were the former Thuringian Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel and the long-time President of the State Office for Monument Preservation in Hesse, Gerd Weiß .
