Matthias Exner

Matthias Exner (* 1957 in Munich ) is a German art historian and monument conservator .

Career

After studying art history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, he did his doctorate on the subject of the frescoes of the crypt of St. Maximin in Trier and their position in late Carolingian wall painting . From 1985 to 1990 he was a research assistant at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich. In 1992 he became a research assistant at the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments , where he became head of the Settlement and Cultural Landscape Documentation Department in 2008 . Since 1997 he has been teaching at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.

He published numerous publications on the art of the early and high Middle Ages, for example on the wall paintings by Müstair , Corvey , Oberzell auf der Reichenau and Lorsch Abbey , on stucco sculpture and on questions of Carolingian and Ottonian book illumination .
