Anton Ress

Anton Ress (born February 20, 1913 in Aschaffenburg , † May 26, 1972 in Bamberg ) was a German art historian and monument conservator .

Anton Ress studied art history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and received his doctorate in 1947 under Hans Jantzen with a thesis on the baroque sculptor Giovanni Maria Morlaiter . In 1949 he became a volunteer at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , then he worked at the art collections of the city of Düsseldorf . From 1951 he worked again at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in Munich, where he worked for the inventory of art monuments . In 1960 he was appointed curator, from 1961 he was responsible as district curator for Lower Franconia , in 1963 he became chief curator . In 1970 he was appointed state curator and head of the department for inventory of art monuments, but remained responsible for Lower Franconia. He died of the consequences of a car accident on a business trip.

Ress wrote the inventory of monuments for the church buildings of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and the city of Nuremberg . In addition, his research areas included baroque sculpture and the history of glass.

His daughter Saskia Durian-Ress (* 1943) also became an art historian.
