Live and act

After graduating from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1902 , Karlinger studied art history and obtained his doctorate in 1909. phil. He then got a job at the Bavarian General Conservatory for Monument Preservation . In 1919 he was given the position of curator for the architecture collection of the architecture collection of the Technical University of Munich , which cooperated with the General Conservatory , at which he also completed his habilitation a year later . He was then taken over by the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Munich, initially as a private lecturer and from 1923 as an associate professor . In 1926 he accepted a call to RWTH Aachen University, where he succeeded Max Schmid-Burgk as full professor of art history and was also appointed director of the Reiff Museum affiliated to the university .

However, he soon developed a certain dissatisfaction with the Aachen University, which was reflected, for example, in the fact that he was no longer curatorially responsible for the collection of the Reiff Museum, which pushed it out of the field of view of the university and the public. But the difficulties in adapting to life in the Rhenish border town of Aachen (in contrast to the state capital and cultural metropolis of Munich) and problems with the emerging National Socialist system made him sick more and more often. Thereupon he decided in 1932 to return to the Technical University of Munich, where he was also taken on as full professor of art history specializing in Romanesque and German folk art in Bavaria . Karlinger worked here until his untimely death in 1944 at the age of 62.
