The Institute for Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz eV is a non-university institution founded in 1960 that is dedicated to researching the history of what is now the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the areas that are historically connected to it.

history

The institute is one of the traditional sites of regional historical research in the Federal Republic of Germany . It was founded in 1960 by Ludwig Petry (†). Continued by Alois Gerlich , Michael Matheus and Franz Josef Felten , it has been managed by Michael Matheus again since 2013.

tasks

The interdisciplinary institute consists of the two departments of regional and constitutional history and regional language and folk research . It is dedicated to researching the history of what is now Rhineland-Palatinate and the areas that are historically connected to it. In addition to numerous research projects from all epochs of Rhineland-Palatinate history, the institute's main task is to convey historical research results to a wide audience. In addition to various series of publications, numerous events such as colloquia , lecture series and excursions serve this purpose .

The institute is an affiliated institute of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and is supported by a registered association , which at the end of 2010 had more than 800 members, primarily in Rhineland-Palatinate, but also in neighboring regions, throughout Germany and abroad. The institute strives to convey this story to the public and is the point of contact for questions relating to the history of the country and language for all interested parties.

Publications

The Institute for Historical Regional Studies is the publisher of the series of publications "Historical Regional Studies", "Mainz Lectures", "Region and Teaching" and "Mainz Studies on Linguistic and Folk Research", which deal primarily with regional and language-historical topics. Individual titles such as the “Dictionary of Viticulture” or the CD-Rom “2000 Years of Mainz” are repeatedly published for these series publications, which appear in a loose order.

The CD-Rom "2000 Years of Mainz" is the institute's first attempt to use digital media to convey local historical content. The joint project of a group of history students, specialist authors, multimedia producers and the institute has produced a multimedia work on the history of the city of Mainz. Various approaches, for example thematic tours through Mainz, historical city maps and views, as well as directories such as the directory of all Mainz bishops, offer the user entry points into the various sections of the city's history.

Based on the success of the CD, the institute has been using the Internet for years to convey historical research results to a wide audience. Furthermore, digital registers of historical sources on the history of the city of Mainz for the period from the 9th to the 15th century were made available online by the Institute for Historical Regional Studies. In order to enable further digital offers and edition projects, the institute founded the Mainz Center for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies (mainzed) in 2015 together with five other scientific institutions in Mainz .
