The mainzed ([maɪ̯nt͡sed]; acronym for Mainz he Ze ntre for D igitalität in the humanities and cultural studies) is a network to pool their digital skills in six scientific institutions at the science location Mainz.

It was founded on November 6th, 2015 as part of the annual academic celebration of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz. Mainzed's partner organizations include the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz , the Mainz University of Applied Sciences , the Institute for Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz , the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , the Leibniz Institute for European History and the Roman-Germanic Central Museum .

The mainzed is based on different, long-term collaborations between the Mainz institutions. The Digital Academy, founded in 2009, a research and development facility for digital humanities of the AdW Mainz, maintains close connections to the Institute for Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz e. V., the Leibniz Institute for European History and the Mainz universities. The Roman-Germanic Central Museum has been running the competence center "Spatial Information Technology in the Humanities" together with the i3mainz - Institute for Spatial Measurement and Information Technology at the Mainz University of Applied Sciences since 1997. In autumn 2013, with the help of the Mainz Science Alliance, the informal "Verbund DHMainz" was founded, which prepared the content of the Digital Humanities Day 2014 in Mainz, in the course of which the first plans for a continuation of the initiative were made.

tasks

The six partners founded mainzed with the aim of supporting and practically implementing the transformation of the humanities and cultural studies disciplines in the course of digitization at the science location Mainz. The mainzed is active in research, research support, qualification and transfer. It also forms a social research infrastructure. It offers scientists of all qualification levels a network for the exchange of knowledge, the development of projects and the expansion of research priorities.

Selection of the represented competencies in the network:

The mainzed undertook the organizational and conceptual development of the inter-university master’s course “Digital Methodology in the Humanities and Cultural Studies”. Since 2016, 24 students have been able to start the 4-semester course in the winter semester. The prerequisite is a bachelor's degree in a humanities or cultural studies subject or one with a focus on computer science. The head of the course and director of mainzed, Kai-Christian Bruhn , received the Academy Award of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate on December 5, 2017 in recognition of his interdisciplinary teaching and research work. The mainzed is the initiator of numerous events through which the dialogue with the public succeeds. The fishbowl discussion organized in 2016 on the topic of “digitality and diversity - the humanities in 2026” can be seen as an example of this . In the keynote , the media scientist Mercedes Bunz dealt with the technology-critical debate in Germany. In November 2016, the mainzed hosted the histocamp together with the Institute for Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz eV, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Open History eV, on the evening of the first day there was an evening event organized by the mainzed. In 2017 there was, among other things, the second fishbowl discussion with the topic “Ready to share?” And a get-together of the Rhine-Main universities with a keynote by Joscha Bach. In 2018 mainzed participated in the establishment of the competence team for research data at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

organization structure

The founding director of mainzed is Kai-Christian Bruhn, his deputy is Klaus Pietschmann . The scientific advisory board, which is made up of representatives from the partner institutions, consists of Klaus Böhm, Alexandra W. Busch , Johannes Paulmann , Jörg Rogge , Torsten Schrade and Kai-Michael Sprenger. The mainzed is currently unable to raise funds. All research funding funds jointly acquired from the network will be spent by the six partners in accordance with the funding applications.

6th annual meeting of the DHd

In March 2019, mainzed held the 6th annual meeting of the association in cooperation with the Center for Digital Research in Humanities, Social and Educational Research (CEDIFOR) and the Association Digital Humanities in the German-speaking Region (DHd). The annual conference was the largest scientific conference on digital humanities in the German-speaking area in terms of the number of participants.

National research data infrastructure

Mainzed and its network partners are represented as participants and co-applicants in four humanities consortia of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), which is currently being set up :

These four projects are also linked by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in order to meaningfully cover overlapping areas. NFDI4Culture with Torsten Schrade as speaker has already received a funding recommendation.
