Alois Gerlich

Alois Gerlich (born September 24, 1925 in Mainz ; † March 11, 2010 ) was a German historian .

As a teenager, the son of a teacher supported the art historian Fritz Victor Arens in saving art treasures. Since the summer semester of 1944, Gerlich has been studying German, history, philosophy and historical theology in Heidelberg . After a short military service he was able to continue his studies in Mainz from 1945 to 1950. He received his doctorate in 1948 at the age of 23 under Heinrich Büttner with a thesis on the history of the St. Stephan monastery in Mainz . In 1950 he passed the state examination for higher teaching post. Then Gerlich worked for a short time in the school service. Under Ludwig Petry , Gerlich received an assistant position in 1953. In 1959, under Petry's direction, he completed his habilitation in Mainz with a thesis on Habsburg - Luxembourg - Wittelsbach in the battle for the German royal crown . Since 1960 Gerlich was a member of the Historical Commission for Nassau .

In 1965 Gerlich became an associate professor and in 1969 a full professor at the Philosophical-Theological University in Bamberg. In 1973 Gerlich succeeded Petrys as a full professor in Mainz. From 1976 to 1994, Gerlich succeeded Petrys as chairman of the Institute for Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz . He was a founding member and long-term chairman of the Society of Friends of the Wiesbaden State Library .

Gerlich's main areas of work included the history of the Middle Rhine and Franconian regions as well as the period between the end of the 12th to the turn of the 14th century, among the questions that were central to the history of the empire, royalty and electoral politics. Gerlich wrote numerous monographs and essays on Nassau history. By reassessing the sources of the Adolf von Nassau royalty , he succeeded in replacing the national historical perspective of the early 20th century with a national historical perspective. Gerlich published numerous articles for the Lexicon of the Middle Ages . As an academic teacher, he supervised 30 dissertations and a habilitation. Important academic students of Gerlich were Karl-Heinz Spieß and Sigrid Schmitt . On his 80th birthday, the Historical Commission for Nassau published 16 fundamental contributions from the period 1953 to 1994 in an anthology.
