Winfried Dotzauer

Winfried Dotzauer (* 1936 ; † November 27, 2016 ) was a German historian .

Winfried Dotzauer studied German, history and law. He received his doctorate in Mainz in 1962 with a thesis on the county of Sponheim . He was a scholarship holder at the Institute for European History in Mainz . In 1966 he became a research assistant. His habilitation from 1973 was devoted to the Freemason Societies on the Rhine. In 1976 he held a substitute professorship at Saarland University . From 1977 to 2001 he was scientific advisor and professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . In 1978 he was awarded the German Freemasons ' Culture Prize.

His main research and work areas were the history of Enlightenment societies , source studies, the imperial districts and the territorial history of Rheinhessen , Hunsrück and Moselle . In 1996 he presented a source study on German history in the late Middle Ages . In 1998 Dotzauer published a work on the German imperial circles from 1383 to 1806.
