Pierre Monnet (born March 21, 1963 in Montreuil ) is a French medieval historian.

Life

After graduating from high school in Paris in 1982, Monnet studied history at the Sorbonne , graduating in 1984 and from 1984 to 1988 at the École normal superieure . In 1987 he obtained his Agrégation and in 1988 his diploma at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) with a thesis on late medieval German history under Philippe Braunstein . From 1988 to 1990 he did his community service at the Institut Français in Frankfurt am Main and in 1994 he received his doctorate from Braunstein at the EHESS on a topic of the late medieval urban history of Frankfurt. His habilitation in 2002 at the University of Paris I also took place on late medieval urbanism in the German Empire, their communication and diplomatic dealings with one another. In 1994 he became Maître de conférences at the University of Burgundy and from 1996 deputy director and 1999 director of the French Historical Mission in Germany ( Mission Historique Française en Allemagne ) in Göttingen at the Max Planck Institute for History , where he was a consultant for medieval history. In 2003 he became Professor of Medieval History at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines . Since 2005 he has been Directeur d'études at EHESS (and in the Groupe d'Anthropologie Historique de l'Occident Médiéval (Gahom) founded there by Jacques Le Goff ), was vice-president from 2007 and president of the Franco-German University from 2008 to 2011 Saarbrücken and has been head of the Institut Français d'Histoire en Allemagne at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main since 2011 .

It deals with urban history in the German Empire in the late Middle Ages. He is Vice President of the Société des historiens médiévistes de l'enseignement supérieur .

Since 2011 he has been a holder of the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany , Knight of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques (2002) and the Ordre national du Mérite (2006).
