history

Mission Historique Française (1977-2008)

Since the 1950s, historians had been calling for a counterpart in Germany to the German Historical Institute in Paris , which was founded in 1958 . But for a long time there was disagreement in France about the type and form of such an institute. In particular, the foreign policy conducted via French cultural institutes ( Institut français ) contributed to a considerable delay in the project. It was not until the 1970s that discussions about the realization of such a research center took place again. In 1977, on the initiative of Robert Mandrou, the Mission Historique Française (MHFA) was finally created . It was integrated into the Max Planck Institute for History in Göttingen and was subordinate to the French Foreign Ministry. After a few initial difficulties, the MHFA developed further and was able to intensify the discourse between German and French historians and social scientists. Many scholarships as well as exchange and mobility programs have been awarded.

When the work of the Center Marc Bloch in Berlin increased sharply in the 1990s and then the Max Planck Institute was finally closed in 2008, it was decided to revise the structure of the MHFA.

Institut Français d'Histoire (2009-2015)

The reformed institute had a new name and a new seat: The Institut Français d'Historie en Allemagne (IFHA) had been located in the premises of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main since 2009 . It was also integrated into the structure of the Institut francais d'Allemagne and thus merged with the Institut français Frankfurt. Since then it has also taken on some cultural activities. By 2013 around 280 scientific events had been organized, 80 works had been published and more than 190 speakers had been invited. From 1984 to 2013 more than 900 scholarship holders were accepted.

The new institute since 2015

On September 1, 2015, the institute was re-established under a new name: Institut Franco-Allemand de Sciences Historiques et Sociales (IFRA / SHS). This institute is intended to do justice to the new cooperation between the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), the Ministère des Affaires Etrangères et du Développement International (MAEDI) and the Goethe University Frankfurt (JWGU). It is still part of the Institut Français network in Germany and is one of the 27 research centers abroad supported by the French Foreign Ministry.
