The source outlet is set in stone, blocked with a grille and has a low fill . The spring water flows into a small basin, the further flow is not visible. Ultimately, depending on the slope, it should flow through a steep, north-facing Talerbe 120 meters down to the Wiesent in the valley, which is less than a kilometer away .

The fountain is the only source on the entire Alb plateau in the municipal area of Wiesenttal. Until 1923 it supplied the residents of Trainmeusel and the shells that were available at the time with water. There was no pipe for this, the water either had to be carried or driven. In dry years the well was closed and the water allocated.

In the Middle Ages, the nearby Neideck Castle probably drew water from the well via a 1300 meter long pond pipe made of oak trunks.

The location of the well on the largely karst plateau of the Alb is geologically a specialty. The fact that a stratified spring can occur here in the subroded White Jurassic is due to a marl package that is only inserted locally between its limestone layers , which, due to its clay content , damms the water and causes it to swell on its slope.

Easter decorations

Today the fountain is visited by near tourists. It is on the section of the Franz Josef Kaiser hiking trail marked with a blue line between Streitberg in the Wiesent valley and the nearby Trainmeusel on the plateau. An information board introduces the local hydrogeology and reports on the historical use of the well. At Easter it is decorated as an Easter fountain according to local custom .
