August Gebeßler

August Gebeßler (born February 4, 1929 in Ortenburg ; † July 31, 2008 in Stuttgart ) was a German art historian and monument conservator and long-time president of the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office .

Live and act

August Gebeßler trained as an aircraft engine fitter until 1945. After successfully attending secondary school, he studied art history in Munich from 1946 to 1949 and submitted his doctoral thesis in 1958; the year before he had already worked as a research assistant at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . August Gebessler published several inventory volumes in the series Die Kunstdenkmäler von Bayern , which belong to the standard literature. In the 1950s and 1960s, it covered several districts in Upper and Middle Franconia in terms of art history. In 1977 Gebeßler became President of the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office , and he held this position until 1994. From 1983 to 1987 he was chairman of the Association of State Monument Preservators. In 1989 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . August Gebeßler died in Stuttgart on July 31, 2008, and was buried at the Prague cemetery on August 7 .
