Alexander von Reitzenstein

Alexander Ernst Carl Heinrich Freiherr von Reitzenstein (born May 15, 1904 in Scheinfeld , † April 16, 1986 in Eggstätt ) was a German art historian and weapons expert . From 1965 to 1969 he was director of the Bavarian Army Museum .

Life

Alexander Freiherr von Reitzenstein comes from the Franconian noble family of the von Reitzenstein family . He was born in 1904 as the son of a former district judge and his wife in Scheinfeld in Central Franconia. From 1924 he studied art history in Berlin, Würzburg and Munich. In 1928 he was at Wilhelm Pinder at the Institute of Art History at the University of Munich with a thesis on The Clemens grave in the cathedral at Bamberg to Dr. phil. ( summa cum laude ) doctorate. The work appeared a year later in the Munich Yearbook of Fine Arts . After his studies, he volunteered in the State Art Collections in Munich and in the inventory of art monuments of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

In 1936 Hans Stöcklein brought him to the Bavarian Army Museum as chief curator, where he worked until 1945. From 1940 the museum was administered by the Wehrmacht , making him an army officer. After being a prisoner of war in 1947, he took over the administration of the Army Museum, which was closed by the Allied military administration. In 1949 it was initially attached to the Bavarian National Museum in Munich as the “Bavarian Army Museum” department . Von Reitzenstein was primarily responsible for the conservation of stocks. From 1965 to 1969 he was director of the Bavarian Army Museum, which it was decided to re-establish in 1963. In 1967 he played a key role in the founding of the Friends' Association. At the end of the 1960s the museum moved to Ingolstadt , with Alexander von Reitzenstein being supported by his successor Peter Jaeckel .

Alexander von Reitzenstein dealt with historical knowledge of the country and arms ; he was particularly interested in armor . The art historian Lorenz Seelig described him as a weapons specialist. In 1959 he was responsible for the revival of the trade journal Waffen- und Costumekunde , which he then edited with the art historian Margarete Braun-Ronsdorf . From 1959 to 1980 he was the responsible editor for the weapons section and until 1986 a consultant for the magazine. He was u. a. Author of the real lexicon on German art history and the New German Biography and contributor to the book series Die Kunstdenkmäler von Bayern .

In 1971 he received the Bavarian Order of Merit .
