German land German art

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deutsche Lande Deutsche Kunst (before 1945 mostly German Lands / German Art , most recently German Lands, German Art ) was a series of books published by Deutscher Kunstverlag .

The series before World War II

The book series was founded in 1925 by Burkhard Meier , the then managing director of Deutscher Kunstverlag. It was created by merging the two series titles Deutsche Lande (from 1922) and Deutsche Kunst (from 1921). The buildings and works of art of important cities and landscapes of the former Holy Roman Empire and the Teutonic Order were presented in the individual volumes . In addition, however, the two artist monographs on Tilman Riemenschneider and Veit Stoss appeared . The texts came from the pen of well-known art historians such as Ernst von Niebelschütz or Wilhelm Pinder . The publisher himself wrote the volume about Potsdam. The edition was usually 5000 copies. A number of titles were published with financial support from the respective city, as they served to promote tourism. This is more or less clearly indicated in the books.

layout

The volumes in the 25.5 × 18.0 cm format were usually available in two versions: in addition to the all-linen edition, a paperback edition was often also available. The latter was a little cheaper. The linen edition from Maulbronn in 1938 cost 3 Reichsmarks , the paperback only 2 Reichsmarks. Black linen was mostly used for the firmly bound volumes, but there were also occasional editions that were wrapped in red or blue linen. All editions were provided with an illustrated dust jacket .

The standard equipment included - in addition to an introductory text, which was usually enriched with engravings and floor plans - an extensive black-and-white section of the table , which in the early days mainly came from the rich holdings of the former Messbildanstalt (later: Staatliche Bildstelle). However, photographers such as Walter Hege and Albert Renger-Patzsch were also commissioned to illustrate the volumes. The texts were set between 1926 and 1929 in the Tiemann Mediaeval , which was then replaced by the Futura . Towards the end of the 1930s, however, several volumes were published in Gothic script. Art paper was used throughout from the late 1920s.

The series after the Second World War

After the Second World War, the series was continued in the established form. Not only were older titles (Munich, Nuremberg, Würzburg) reissued, but numerous new volumes were also published. However, for some particularly badly damaged cities (Berlin, Bremen, Munich, Nuremberg, Ulm), only the pre-war state could be presented, as the reconstruction at the beginning of the 1950s was far from complete and many buildings were still in ruins. The former East German territories and the area of the newly founded GDR were no longer taken into account in the series (exceptions were the volume Burgen in Sachsen und Thüringen, published in collaboration with Edition Leipzig, and the new edition of Pinder's famous book The Naumburg Cathedral and its pictorial works ). In contrast to the previous editions from 1939 and 1941 , the volume written by Hans Reuther on the country on the Harz was limited to the western parts of the Federal Republic. The representations published after 1945 about the Austrian cities of Linz , Krems , Salzburg and Braunau are officially included in the series, but there is no reference to this in the books themselves. The artist's monographs were also continued within the series, and volumes appeared on the brothers Asam, Balthasar Neumann and Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The design of the books did not change at first, but the colored head cut was dropped and the art paper - with a few exceptions - was only used for the blackboard section. Renowned photographers (e.g. Lala Aufsberg , Helga Schmidt-Glassner and Lothar Klimek ) were now preferably commissioned for the illustration .

The 1970s: new layout

From 1972 onwards, the volumes were given a new look: the black dust jackets were now consistently provided with a four-color photo and the linen cover was embossed with white instead of the previous gold-colored embossing. In addition, the text section has been enhanced by color plates, after color reproductions were previously to be found on the front page of some editions. But by the mid-1970s, the gradual end of the series became apparent: the competitive pressure from the almost explosively increasing reproduction of color photography had become too great, the great age of "photo graphics" in the 1960s had become history .

The end of the line

In 1985 the last new publication came out with a monograph on Benrath Castle near Düsseldorf , written by Irene Markowitz, and just two years later the series was finally discontinued with a special paperback edition entitled "Berlin in the history of its buildings" for the city's 750th anniversary . In total, more than 150 volumes were published, which at times enjoyed great popularity and some were published several times (Munich: 6 editions, Nuremberg: 7 editions, Würzburg: 8 editions).

Others

From 1954 the publishing house published another series under the title Westfälische Kunst , the volumes of which had similar equipment.
