Theodor Demmler

Theodor Demmler (born January 13, 1879 in Heilbronn , † July 21, 1944 in Berlin ) was a German art historian .

Life

Theodor Demmler was the son of the evangelical clergyman Emil Demmler (1843–1922). After studying art history at the universities of Tübingen and Berlin from 1904 and receiving his doctorate in Tübingen in 1909, he became a trainee at the Berlin State Museums in 1910 . During his studies he became a member of the Roigel Royal Society of Tübingen . In 1911 Demmler became an employee of the "Sculptures of the Christian Epochs" department of the Kaiser Friedrich Museum . Here he was appointed assistant in 1913, deputy director in 1915 and director of this department in 1919 as successor to Wilhelm von Bode . He went on numerous study trips. During the First World War he worked on behalf of the Supreme Army Command in the context of art protection in the occupied western territories, in particular in the "protection and recovery" of art monuments in northern France. He was mainly concerned with the art of the Middle Ages and modern times. He was married to Gertrud von Falke, daughter of the art historian Otto von Falke . Their common grave is on the south-west cemetery Stahnsdorf .
