Hans Feldtkeller
Hans Feldtkeller (born October 10, 1901 in Halle ; † December 8, 1982 in Wiesbaden ) was a German preservationist and from 1955 to 1966 the state curator of Hesse .
Life
Hans Feldtkeller studied architecture at the Technical Universities of Darmstadt and Stuttgart , among others with Paul Bonatz . Since 1931 worked as a monument conservator , since 1933 in a permanent position at the provincial curator of the province of Saxony in Halle . He also studied art history and received his doctorate in 1937 on the Walbeck collegiate church . In the same year he switched to the district curator for Kurhessen in Kassel , Friedrich Bleibaum .
With his doctorate he made a name for himself as an architectural historian and subsequently undertook a series of architectural archaeological investigations, such as: a. at the Kaufungen collegiate church , the town church in Bad Hersfeld , the ruins of the Bad Hersfeld monastery , on the Christenberg , a medieval desert , in the Helmarshausen monastery , in the Wetzlar cathedral , in the Ilsenburg monastery , the Brombach monastery church (today: Haundorf )

He represented a modern concept of monument preservation , which primarily depends on the preservation of the historically inherited and grown, less on the reconstruction . So he succeeded in ensuring that - contrary to the community's wishes for uncovering - the slate cladding of the historic town hall in Frankenberg (Eder) was retained, as well as the vault of the monastery church in Ilbenstadt , as well as those added later in Wilhelmshöhe Castle under Wilhelm II of Hessen-Kassel Connecting structures between the three main wings, the rood screen in the monastery church of Haina and St. Valentinus in Kiedrich or the neo-Gothic organ in the Marienkirche in Gelnhausen .
His monument preservation work was interrupted from 1943 to 1948 by his participation in the Second World War , being a prisoner of war and working as a draftsman and watercolor painter before he returned to the civil service - now in the state of Hesse. After the first post-war state curator of Hesse, Friedrich Bleibaum, retired in 1950, the state preservation of monuments in Hesse was largely dissolved. Hans Feldtkeller managed the rest of the office that remained in Marburg . Initially, the task of the state curator was co-led by the responsible officer in the Hessian Ministry of Culture (today: Hessian Ministry of Science and Art ), and in 1951 this task was assigned to Karl Nothnagel . In this situation, the Hessian state parliament also canceled the modest approach of 20,000 DM , which was available to monument preservation as a grant for monument owners. In what appeared to be a hopeless situation, Karl Nothnagel was unable to cope with this burden and died in 1955. Hans Feldtkeller became his successor.
During his tenure as state curator (1955–1966), Hans Feldtkeller succeeded in rebuilding a state preservation organization and establishing its headquarters at the seat of the state government in Wiesbaden . The official seat was Biebrich Castle . Only the one in Marburg was retained as a branch. This created the basic administrative structure for the preservation of monuments in Hesse , as it still exists today. He was retired on October 31, 1966. His successor as state curator was Gottfried Kiesow .
