The Church of the Holy Cross , today Kaufungen Collegiate Church , was founded by Empress Kunigunde and consecrated on July 13, 1025, the first anniversary of the death of her husband, Emperor Heinrich II . It is part of the former Kaufungen monastery in the Oberkaufungen district of the Hessian municipality of Kaufungen in the Kassel district . The church is considered an important work of late Ttonian art . The west building, exposed inside in 1938, with arched arcades over two very slim columns, dates back to pre-Romanesque times .

history

In 1017 Empress Kunigunde founded a Benedictine monastery in Kaufungen after a serious illness by converting the Kaufungen royal court. In the same year the construction of a Romanesque basilica began on this area , which was consecrated on July 13, 1025 after completion. After severe damage, the choir part had to be vaulted around 1175; it was based on the model in the Lippoldsberg monastery . In the second quarter of the 13th century, the conversion to a Gothic hall church began . After a fire in 1422, most of the windows and doors had to be replaced; the side aisle walls were raised in the Gothic style. Also in the 15th century it was painted with Gothic wall paintings. After another fire, the church was enlarged in 1564 and painted wooden ceilings were added.

Organs

Wilhelm organ from 1802

On the imperial box of the collegiate church there is an organ that was built in 1802 by the court organ builder Georg Peter Wilhelm from Kassel . Most of the instrument is original. After it involuntarily fell silent in 1974, the instrument was extensively restored by Jehmlich Orgelbau Dresden between 2013 and 2019 and officially put back into operation on October 20, 2019. The purely mechanical instrument has 1150 pipes and 21 registers on two manuals and a pedal.
