George S. Dole

George Stuart Dole (born January 30, 1885 in Ypsilanti , Michigan , † September 6, 1928 in Winthrop , Maine ) was an American wrestler . He was a 1908 free style featherweight Olympic champion.

Career

George S. Dole was born in Michigan and raised in Maine . He began free-style wrestling in high school with his twin brother Louis . In 1902 both brothers enrolled at Yale University and were soon among the best wrestlers at that university. From 1903 comparative fights took place regularly between Yale Univ. and Columbia Univ. instead of. George won all of his fights until 1908.

In 1905 he also won the bantamweight title at the Eastern Championships, which was held for the first time (championship of the states located on the east coast of the USA). In 1907, George also became AAU bantamweight champion in Newark , NJ . He defeated the Olympic champion from 1904 George Mehnert . It was Mehnert's only defeat in 7 years.

In 1908 Mehnert and George were nominated for the Olympic Games. Since both were bantamweights, George Dole voluntarily went one weight class higher, in the featherweight division. He was then also Olympic champion in this weight class with four victories in London .

After completing his studies, George S. Dole worked as a wrestling trainer at Yale Univ until 1917. active. He then went to the Navy and was after his time in the Navy as an economics professor in St. Lawrence. George S. Dole died of a heart attack in 1928. In 1997 he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
