Yandro Quintana
Yandro Miguel Quintana Ribalta (born November 30, 1980 in Ciego de Ávila ) is a former Cuban wrestler . He was the 2004 featherweight free style Olympic champion.
Career
Yandro Quintana started wrestling at the age of 8 in 1988. After his first national successes, he was delegated to the top Cuban club Cerro Pelado Cuba Havana, where he was trained by Filiberto Delgado. Arturo Yanez joined the Cuban national relay as a coach. The 1.62 meter tall athlete wrestled in bantam and featherweight and only in free style. He studied sports in Havana.
The first appearance of Yandro Quintana at an international championship took place in 1998 at the World Youth Games in Moscow . He came there in the weight class up to 42 kg body weight in 6th place. A year later he won his first medal at the Junior World Championships in Sydney with a third place in the bantamweight division.
From 2000 to 2008 he started regularly at almost all major international championships and was able to win many victories and medals. His first win came in 2000 when he was in Cali (Colombia) Pan American bantamweight champion in front of the American Eric S. Guerrero and the Canadian Guivi Sissaouri . However , he has not yet been used at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney .
He defended the title of Pan-American Master in 2001 in Santo Domingo . He won there again in bantamweight before Arnel Kernizan de Jesus from Puerto Rico and Chris Feeger from the United States. At the world championship this year in Sofia he came with three wins to the quarter-finals, in which he was defeated against the Mongols Ojuunbilegiin Pürewbaatar and thus took 7th place.
In 2002, Yandro Quintana was again Pan American champion in Maracaibo . He won featherweight ahead of Saeed Azarbayjani from Canada and Danny Felix from the United States. At the 2002 World Cup in Tehran , he managed only one victory over Ryosuke Ota from Japan . He only reached 12th place. In 2003 he won the Pan American Featherweight Games in Santo Domingo in front of Guivi Sissaouri and Eric S. Guerrero. Shortly afterwards he succeeded in winning his first medal at a world championship in New York . After victories over renowned opponents such as Anatoli Guidea from Bulgaria , Wassyl Fodoryschyn from Ukraine , Tevfik Odabasi from Turkey and Song Jae-Myung from South Korea, he was only defeated in the final against Arif Abdullayev from Azerbaijan with 1: 2 rounds (3: 4 technical points).
In 2004, Yandro Quintana won again in Guatemala City at the Pan American Featherweight Championships in front of Clint Musser from the United States and Jonathan Rodriguez from Puerto Rico. The Olympic Games in Athens that year became the highlight of his career . With victories over Ivan Velikov Djosew from Bulgaria, Sushil Kumar from India , Dawid Pogosjan from Georgia , Wassyl Fedoryschyn and Masoud Mostafa Jokar from Iran, he won the Olympic gold medal in a superior style .
At the 2005 World Cup in Budapest , Yandro Quintana failed to become world champion for the first time . There he defeated Kenichi Yumoto from Japan, Tevfik Odabasi, Ojuunbilegiin Pürewbaatar and Morad Mohammadi from Iran, but was defeated in the final against Alan Dudajew from Russia with 1: 2 rounds (4: 5 technical points) and had to fight like in 2003 content with the runner-up world title. At the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou he was defeated in the 3rd round by the new Russian star Mawlet Batirow , where his defeat with 0: 2 rounds and 0: 3 techn. Points was pretty clear, so dropped out and only reached 9th place.
In 2007, Yandro Quintana won in Rio de Janeiro at the Pan American Games again in featherweight by defeating the 2006 vice world champion Mike Zadick from the United States. He has since been the sole record holder with six wins at Pan American Championships and Pan American Games. He did not start at the 2007 World Cup.
In 2008 he first had to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing that year . He succeeded in this impressively with a victory at the qualifying tournament in Martigny / Switzerland , where he won the featherweight against Selimchan Chusseinow from Azerbaijan and Morad Mohammadi. At the Olympic Games in Beijing he won his first fight over Qin He from China , but then lost his next fight again against Mawlet Batirow, against whom he was able to win a round this time. Since Batirow reached the final, Yandro Quintana got the chance to continue fighting in the consolation round. However, he was defeated here against Selimchan Chusseinow with 0: 2 rounds. He himself and the Cuban wrestling camp were of the opinion that he was disadvantaged in this fight, which led to his defeat.
In December 2008, he announced on Cuban television that he would end his wrestling career because of a persistent shoulder injury. He later started a new career as a coach.
