qualification

A maximum of one NOK starter was allowed to start per competition . For this, the NOK had to achieve quota places in various qualifying competitions. The main qualification competition was the 2007 World Championships in Baku , followed by several continental and intercontinental events in 2008. Finally, seven more places were awarded by invitation across all weight classes, with representatives of the host country China being the first choice in case of doubt. In the end, between 16 and 21 athletes participated in each competition.

The Swede Ara Abrahamian caused a scandal, who accused the international wrestling federation FILA of not acting fairly out of disappointment over the lost semi-finals. He put the bronze medal he had won on the wrestling mat, because according to his own statements it counted nothing for him, only the gold medal. He then resigned from competitive sports. Later, the IOC publicly dismissed Abrahamian the bronze medal for unsportsmanlike conduct. However, the medal was not reassigned, so there is only one bronze medalist. Abrahamian, who won silver in Athens, lost in the semifinals to the eventual Olympic champion from Italy, Andrea Minguzzi , after a controversial decision. Minguzzi beat Hungary's Zoltán Fodor 6-2 in the final .
