Clarissa Chun (born August 27, 1981 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is an American wrestler. She became world champion in Tokyo in 2008 in the weight class up to 48 kg body weight.

Career

Clarissa Chun was born in Honolulu to a Chinese father and a Japanese mother. Living in Kapolei near Honolulu, she started wrestling at the YBA Judo Club Hawaii when she was seven. At that time she was also active in swimming and also played water polo. She attended Roosevelt High School in Honolulu and got into wrestling. At first she started there due to the lack of female opponents in the boy team. In 1998 she became the Hawaiian champion in the weight class up to 44 kg body weight (KG).

In order to advance in her sport, she moved to Marshall , Missouri in 1999 and attended Missouri Valley College there. In 2002 she went to Colorado Springs and has been training with Keith Wilson and Drew Lawrence since then . She belongs to the Sunkist Kids wrestling club .

In 2000 she took part in the US championships for the first time and came in the weight class up to 46 kg in 2nd place behind Patricia Miranda . In this year her international career began with an 8th place at the Junior World Championship in Nantes and a 2nd place behind Maria del Los Angeses Barraza from Mexico at the Pan American Championships in Cali . Both times again in the class up to 46 kg. She was also used at the World Championships for Senior Women in Sofia that year, but had to pay hardship there, because she only came in 13th place without a win.

In 2001 Clarissa Chun became the first US student champion and reached 3rd place in the US senior women championship. At the Junior World Championship 2001 in Martigny / Switzerland she improved to 5th place in the class up to 46 kg. The German Brigitte Wagner became the junior world champion in her weight class .

In 2002 Clarissa Chun came in the US championship only on the 4th place, but was used in the Pan American Games in Maracaibo . In the weight class up to 48 kg, she achieved 3rd place behind Mayelis Caripa Castillo from Venezuela and Ileni Barrero from Peru .

In 2003 and 2004 she finished 2nd behind Patricia Miranda in the US championship in the class up to 48 kg. On this wrestler she also failed in the US elimination for the Olympic Games in Athens, where competitions in women's wrestling were held for the first time.

In the years 2005 to 2007 Clarissa Chun was not used in any international championships, although in 2006 she was the first US champion in the class up to 48 kg. In 2008 she only came 4th at the US championship, but then managed the surprise at the Olympic Trials and won there ahead of Patricia Miranda. She represented the United States at the Olympic Games in Beijing in the class up to 48 kg. In Beijing she won over Sofia Mattsson from Sweden and Vanessa Boubryemm from France , but then lost to the multiple world champions Chiharu Ichō from Japan (2: 4 technical points) and Irina Melnik-Merleni from Ukraine (1: 6 technical points) and came in 5th place.

It then also competed at the World Championships in Tokyo two months after the Olympic Games in Beijing . There she achieved the greatest success of her career in the weight class up to 48 kg, because she became world champion with victories over Demet Kaya, Turkey , Tsai Pai-Jing, Taiwan , Makiko Sakamoto , Japan and Jyldie Echimasa-Turtbajew from Kazakhstan .
