Erica Sharp
Erica Jo Sharp (born March 29, 1975 in Ganges) is a former Canadian wrestler . In 1999 she became vice world champion in the weight class up to 51 kg.
Career
Erica Sharp got into wrestling through her father, Bob Sharp, who was a high school wrestling coach. It is based in Whitehorse, Yukon Province . After high school, she attended the University of Alberta , where she studied education. She started for the Bears Wrestling Club Edmonton and for the University of Alberta Panda Wrestling Club . During her career she wrestled with a height of 1.54 meters in the weight classes up to 51 kg and 55 kg body weight. Her trainers were Leigh Vierling, Mitch Ostberg and Vang Ioannides. She came to several missions at world championships, but could never qualify for participation in the Olympic Games. Her main competitors in her weight classes in Canada were Lindsay Belisle , Tonya Verbeek and Jennifer Ryz , with whom she had to share the starting places at the international championships.
In 1993 Erica Sharp was the first Canadian champion in the weight class up to 50 kg. By 2007 she won seven more Canadian championship titles. She has also been named Canadian Student Master five times, a title that is very popular in Canada.
In 1993 her international career began with a start at the World Cup in Stavern / Norway . She came in 6th place in the weight class up to 50 kg. World champion was Anna Gomis from France . In the same year Erica Sharp took 3rd place in the Commonwealth Games in Victoria / Canada in the weight class up to 53 kg. Her next start at an international championship was the 1996 World Cup in Sofia . In the weight class up to 50 kg, she just missed the medal ranks behind Olga Smirnowa from Russia , Yoshiko Endo , Japan and Ida Hellström from Sweden with a 4th place.
At the Pan American Championship in 1997 in San Juan she came in the weight class up to 51 kg KG behind Wendy Magdiel Yzaguirre Gonzelez from Venezuela on the 2nd place. At the world championship of the same year in Clermont-Ferrand she defeated Ida Hellström in the same weight class, but then lost to Joanna Piasecka from Poland and Angélique Berthenet-Hidalgo from France. But with a victory over Elena Egoschina from Russia, she secured 5th place.
In 1999 Erica Sharp achieved the greatest success of her career in the world championship in Swedish soil in the weight class up to 51 kg. There she won the World Cup silver medal with victories over Gao Yanzhi from China , Agora Papavasileiou from Greece , Ida Hellström and Stephanie Murata from the United States and a defeat in the final against Seiko Yamamoto from Japan . In 2001 she was unable to build on this success at the World Championships in Sofia in the weight class up to 56 kg, because she lost there to Sara Eriksson from Sweden and was only able to fight for 11th place with a victory over Geraldine Roxburgh from New Zealand .
In 2002 and 2003 Erica Sharp did not play at the international championships and in 2004 Tonya Verbeek failed at the internal Canadian Olympic elimination . So she was only at the start again at the 2005 World Cup in Budapest . She delivered good fights there, but lost after three wins against Hitomi Sakamoto from Japan and in the fight for a bronze medal against Wen Juling from China, so that she finally finished 5th.
At her last start at a world championship in Baku in 2007 she won another medal in the weight class up to 51 kg. She won in Baku over Dilek Atakol from Turkey and Samira Rachmanowa from Russia. Then lost to Hitomi Sakamoto, but then secured a bronze medal with victories over Maria del Mar Serrano Barcelo from Spain and Tatjana Bakatjuk from Ukraine .
