Boden [ 'bu: dən ] ( Sami Suttes , Finnish Puuti, Putas ) is a city in the Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten . The main town of the municipality of the same name is located about 35 kilometers northwest of Luleå on Lule älv .

history

Boden was originally a small farming village that became a church village with the completion of a church in 1831 . The development of the settlement began with the construction of the railway. In 1888 the Gällivare- Luleå railway was inaugurated, which ran past Boden. In 1894 the main northern railway line from Stockholm reached bottom. With the completion of the ore railway to Narvik , Boden became an important transport hub.

The good transport connections and the favorable geographical location led the Swedish Diet in 1900 to decide to build a large fortress around Boden . Within two decades, the city's population doubled from 2,500 in 1900 to 6,000 in 1918. In 1919, Boden received city rights.

In the decades that followed, several regiments were stationed in Boden and the town became an important military training center. Because of its important strategic location, Boden was also known as the “Gibraltar of the North”.

Boden has a football club, Bodens BK , which plays in Division 1 Norra (3rd division, North Season).
