Niclas Wallin (born February 20, 1975 in Boden ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who played 707 games for the Carolina Hurricanes and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League and 293 more for Luleå HF in the course of his active career between 1994 and 2012 and Brynäs IF in the Swedish Elitserien on the position of defender . Wallin celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Carolina Hurricanes when he won the Stanley Cup in 2006 .
Career
Wallin went through the junior division of the ice hockey team in his hometown during his junior years. At the age of 19, the young defender made his debut in the 1994/95 season in the senior team of Boden IK , which at that time belonged to the second-rate Allsvenskan . At the same time, he also ran in the junior class both this and the following season. In the summer of 1996 Wallin was signed by the Elitserien club Brynäs IF from Gävle , for whom he played for the following four years. In the 1998/99 season he won the Swedish championship title with the team , which the defender took part in the following season with the team in the European Hockey League . In addition, he set a new personal record with 16 scorer points in the course of the national championship.
The consistent performance of the defensive, Swedish defender also made the scouts of the franchises of the North American National Hockey League aware of him. Therefore, he was selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft 2000 as a total of 97th player by the Carolina Hurricanes . They signed him before the beginning of the 2000/01 season and brought him to North America. There they put Wallin in his first season both in the NHL squad and in their farm team , the Cincinnati Cyclones from the International Hockey League . From the 2001/02 season , the Swede finally belonged to the regular squad of the Hurricanes, with whom he reached the final series of the Stanley Cup in the same season , where the team, however, was defeated by the Detroit Red Wings in five games. The following two years were marked by little success for the team from the state of North Carolina , as the playoffs were missed. However, Wallin was able to consolidate his position on the defensive and also set new personal NHL records on the offensive.
Since the 2004/05 NHL season fell victim to a lockout , the defender returned to his home country to bridge the gap. There he spent the season at Luleå HF in the Elitserien, before moving back to the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2005/06 season. After the franchise had qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2002, it won the prestigious Stanley Cup at the end of the season in a competitive, seven-game final series against the Edmonton Oilers . Wallin received the nickname "The Secret Weapon" in the course of the playoffs , as his three playoff goals scored to date have all fallen in overtime and were therefore decisive for the game. After the triumph, it took another three years for the team to make the next playoff participation. In the 2009/10 season , however, there was again a sporting setback when the Hurricanes found themselves in one of the last places in the table after two thirds of the season. As a result, after much deliberation, the management separated from the Swede. On February 7, 2010 they gave him together with a five-round draft pick in exchange for a draft prick for the second round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft to the San Jose Sharks , thus ringing in the rebuilding. Wallin had previously deleted a clause from his expiring contract that prohibited a transfer to another club. With the San Jose Sharks, one of the contenders for the Stanley Cup, Wallin should stabilize the defensive with his experience. However, the Californians failed in the Conference Finals at the Vancouver Canucks and missed the envisaged first-time entry into the finals of the Stanley Cup. In June 2011 the defender of Luleå HF was equipped with a contract for the 2011/12 season in the Elitserien and subsequently acted as his team's captain. He missed the entire 2012/13 season due to an injury before retiring in March 2013.
International
On an international level, Wallin represented his home country at the U18 European Junior Championship in 1996 in Ufa, Russia, and two years later at the 1998 Junior World Championship in Finland . While he won the bronze medal at the European Championships and contributed two assists in five tournament games, he did not succeed at the Junior World Championships. Nevertheless, the Swede was able to shine with the personal gain of three goals and an assist in seven games.
Then it took ten years for Wallin to be called up again for the Swedish national team. At the 2008 World Cup in Canada , he played seven games for the Tre Kronor and contributed two goals and two assists. After losing to hosts Canada in the semi-finals and Finland in the game for third place, the team narrowly missed out on winning the medal.
