The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 2006 began on April 21, 2006 and ended on June 19, 2006 with the Carolina Hurricanes' 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers . In their second final appearance since losing in the playoff final in 2002, the Hurricanes won the first Stanley Cup in their franchise history . Furthermore, they found in the person of goalkeeper Cam Ward to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of the playoffs, as well as in Eric Staal the top scorer of the season post . For the defeated Oilers it was the first final participation since their Stanley Cup victory in 1990 and at the same time the last playoff participation for the next ten years. In addition, two former World Hockey Association franchises faced each other for the first time in the final .

While all favorites prevailed in the first round of the Eastern Conference , the opposite happened in the West for the first time in league history: All lower-seeded teams reached the second round. This culminated in the fact that the Edmonton Oilers moved into the Stanley Cup final for the first time, in eighth position and thus the lowest seeded team. The St. Louis Blues missed the playoffs for the first time since 1979, so the third longest series of 25 playoff appearances in a row came to an end. In contrast, the New York Rangers qualified for the first time since 1997 for the post-season , so that the fifth-longest negative series of seven missed playoffs in a row ended.

mode

After the three division winners and the five other most points teams have qualified the Conference of each conference, start the knock-out system discharged playoffs . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. In addition, it ends with the first goal ( Sudden Death ) and not, as usual in the regular season, with a shootout .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner Carolina Hurricanes traditionally had a total of 52 people, including 25 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Among them was Claude Larose as a scout , who has already won the Stanley Cup five times as a player. The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. But there are always exceptions.

The 25 players in the Carolinas are made up of two goalkeepers, nine defenders and 14 attackers, including six Europeans . Mark Recchi had already won the Cup 15 years earlier with the Pittsburgh Penguins . A mistake had been made while engraving; Eric Staal had accidentally written “Staaal”. The error was subsequently corrected.
