The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1970 began on April 8, 1970 and ended on May 10, 1970 with the Boston Bruins' 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues . The Bruins won their fourth title and first since 1941 . They also had in the person of Phil Esposito the top scorer with Bobby Orr to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player in their ranks. The St. Louis Blues, however, lost 4-0 in the final for the third time in a row and therefore ensured that the league counteracted this one-sidedness with several changes for the next season. So far, due to the division and playoff structure in the Stanley Cup final, the best team of the Original Six always competed against the strongest representative of the expansion team from 1967, with St. Louis representing the expansion teams three times and each time without a chance. At the same time, the final of the 1970 playoffs was the last final of the Blues for the time being, before they won their first Stanley Cup almost 50 years later in the 2019 playoffs .
Furthermore, with the Canadiens de Montréal and the Toronto Maple Leafs, all Canadian teams missed the playoffs for the first time in NHL history, which was not to happen again until 2016 (with seven teams). In addition, the Canadiens failed for the first time since 1948 in the regular season, so that the longest series of 21 consecutive playoff participations at that time came to an end. Synonymous with it they became the fifth reigning Stanley Cup winner in league history, who missed the following post-season .
mode
The four best teams from the Eastern and Western divisions qualified for the playoffs . In the quarter-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth on the seeding list faced each other within each division. The semifinals were then also played within the divisions, so that the two division winners contested the subsequent Stanley Cup final.
All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
