In the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft , the player was selected in the first round in eleventh position by the Boston Bruins . After the draft, he completed the majority of two seasons with the Oklahoma City Blazers in the Central Hockey League .

In the NHL season 1971/72 he came in the first eleven games of the Bruins for use before he was transferred to the California Golden Seals on November 17, 1971 in exchange for Rich LeDuc and Chris Oddleifson . After around three seasons for one of the worst teams in the National Hockey League , the striker was given to the Chicago Black Hawks on May 24, 1974 . California received players Mike Christie and Len Frig in return . In Chicago, his points yield increased. Boldirev played in a row with Grant Mulvey and Darcy Rota and was particularly often used in outnumbered situations. After almost five years with the Black Hawks, he was given to the Atlanta Flames after an exchange deal on March 13, 1979 together with Darcy Rota and Phil Russell . In return, Tom Lysiak , Pat Ribble , Greg Fox , Harold Phillipoff and Miles Zaharko moved to Chicago. Eleven months later, Boldirev was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks . In the 1981/82 NHL season , Ivan Boldirev reached the Stanley Cup final with the Canucks . The Canucks were defeated there by the New York Islanders in the best-of-seven series with 0: 4.

On January 17, 1983, the Canucks transferred him to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Mark Kirton . In the 1983/84 season he set his personal best with 83 scorer points in 75 completed games. After another season in Detroit, the left shooter ended his career.
