The 1983/84 NHL season was the 67th season in the National Hockey League . 21 teams played 80 games each. The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup after a 4-1 win in the final series against the New York Islanders . After 41 years, overtime has now been reintroduced into the regular season. Of the 140 games that ended in a draw, 54 were included in the 5 minute sudden death overtime. As the third goalkeeper, the only 18-year-old Tom Barrasso managed to win the Calder Memorial Trophy and Vezina Trophy in his first season . In Edmonton, Wayne Gretzky continued to dominate the league. But the success wasn't just due to him. With Paul Coffey was the best offensive defender since Bobby Orr with the Oilers. But Jari Kurri , Mark Messier and Glenn Anderson were also instrumental in the fact that the Islanders could be ousted from the throne after four titles in a row.
