The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1984 began on April 4, 1984 and ended on May 19, 1984 with the Edmonton Oilers' 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders . After the Oilers had lost 4-0 in the previous year , they decided the new edition of last year's final pairing for themselves and thus won their first Stanley Cup in their second participation in the final. At the same time they ended the era of the Islanders, who had previously celebrated four Stanley Cup successes in a row and in this post-season set a record that is still valid today with the 19th consecutive playoff series. However, the 1984 playoffs also mark the Islanders' last participation in the finals for the time being (status: 2019 playoffs). Edmonton, however, established its own dynasty with the victory, in which the team would win five titles in the following seven years. They also put in their team captain Wayne Gretzky the top scorer as well as Mark Messier to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of the post-season .

While the last new edition of a finals was only six years ago ( 1978 : Montréal and Boston ), it took 25 years until this happened again ( 2009 : Pittsburgh and Detroit ).

mode

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.

The series of the first round are played in the best-of-five mode, the series of all subsequent rounds in the best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to progress from the second round; in the first round three. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. In the Stanley Cup finals of the playoffs in 1984 and 1985, however, this 2-2-1-1-1 mode was deviated from and instead played according to a 2-3-2 rhythm. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
