Gregory Scott Gilbert (born January 22, 1962 in Mississauga , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who worked for the New York Islanders , Chicago Blackhawks , New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues has played in the National Hockey League .

Career

Greg Gilbert began his career as a hockey player with the Toronto Marlboros , for which he was active from 1979 to 1982 in the junior league Ontario Hockey Association and its successor Ontario Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1980 in the fourth round as a total of 80th player by the New York Islanders , for whom he made his debut in the National Hockey League towards the end of the 1981/82 season and with which the winger on Won the prestigious Stanley Cup straight away . He was able to repeat this success with his team in the following season . During his time with the Islanders, the Canadian also played a few games for their farm teams Indianapolis Checkers from the Central Hockey League and Springfield Indians from the American Hockey League . At the Islanders, he was always one of the leading players.

Shortly before the trade deadline , Gilbert was given on March 7, 1989 in exchange for a five-round vote by the New York Islanders for the NHL Entry Draft 1989 to the Chicago Blackhawks . In the following three seasons, the Canadian was also able to convince with good performances in Chicago. Before the 1993/94 season , Gilbert was hired as a free agent by the New York Rangers , with whom he also won the Stanley Cup at the end of the season. He himself contributed to this success with 19 points, five of which were goals, in a total of 99 games. After the 1994/95 season had started late due to a lockout , he was selected in January 1995 in the NHL Waiver Draft by the St. Louis Blues , for which he played for a year and a half until he retired at the age of 34.

From 1996 to 2000 Gilbert was the head coach of the Worcester IceCats from the American Hockey League. In the 1996/97 season he received the Louis AR Pieri Memorial Award for best coach in the league. The 2000/01 season he began as an assistant to Don Hay at the NHL team Calgary Flames , before he replaced Hay in the course of the season after his dismissal on the position of head coach. After a false start at the beginning of the 2002/03 season , Gilbert himself was replaced by Al MacNeil . From 2003 to 2006 he coached the OHL team in his hometown, the Mississauga IceDogs , before taking care of the Canadian team at the 2006 U18 World Junior Championship . He then worked for three years as the head coach of the Toronto Marlies from the AHL. For the 2009/10 season he moved within the AHL to the Adirondack Phantoms , was there after a disastrous start to the season with only three points in 13 games early in the 2010/11 season and replaced by John Paddock . In the course of the 2011/12 season he returned as head coach of the Saginaw Spirit in the OHL junior league.
