NHL Entry Draft

The 1980 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 11, 1980 in the Forum de Montréal in Montréal in the Canadian province of Québec . In the 18th edition of the NHL Entry Draft , the teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) selected a total of 210 players in ten rounds. The Canadian center Doug Wickenheiser was selected by the Canadiens de Montréal as the first overall draft pick . Dave Babych for the Winnipeg Jets and Denis Savard for the Chicago Black Hawks followed in second and third . The order of the draft resulted from the reversed final table of the past 1979/80 season .
The 1980 Entry Draft was the first to be open to the public in an NHL arena, as is common today. In addition, it had already been decided in the previous year that the starting age should be lowered again, now from 19 to 18 years. One of the consequences of this was that for the first time players from the high school sector and from the second-rate Canadian junior leagues were included in the draft. Despite significantly more actors selected (210 compared to 126 in the previous year), the talent of this year did not match that of the previous year. Nonetheless, with Denis Savard, Larry Murphy , Paul Coffey and Jari Kurri, four later Hall of Fame members are represented. Other greats of the year include Brent Sutter , Bernie Nicholls , Reijo Ruotsalainen , Steve Larmer , Andy Moog , Patrik Sundström and Håkan Loob .
