Oulun Kärpät or simply Kärpät (German: stoats ) is a Finnish ice hockey team , which in Oulu in Oulu Energia Areena plays.
history
On May 15, 1946, Kärpät was founded in Oulu under the name Oulun Kärpät 46 . Football was first played in the sports club . Bandy followed as the first winter sport .
In January 1947, the club's ice hockey team was founded. Although initially unsuccessful, Kärpät focused on ice hockey from then on.
When the SM-liiga was founded in 1975, Kärpät was still playing in the 1st division, but made it into the top Finnish league as early as 1977 and celebrated its first major success in this league in 1980 with a bronze medal. In the 1980–81 season, Kärpät became Finnish champions for the first time.
In 1995, Kärpät had to play in the 1st division again, but were promoted back to the SM-liiga in 2000 .
In 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2014 and 2015 they finally became Finnish champions again, third in 2006 and 2016 and vice-champions in 2009 and 2019. The eighth championship was celebrated in 2018.
