The 2006/07 season was the 32nd season in the SM-liiga . It started on September 14, 2006 and ended on April 12, 2007. The Finnish ice hockey champion was Kärpät Oulu for the fourth time .
In the spring of 2007 a team from the Mestis had the opportunity to move up to the SM-liiga and to form the 15th team in the highest league (see Mestis 2006/07 # SM-liiga qualification ).
Regular season
mode
Each team had to play four times against every other team in the league and four times against local teams. Each game consisted of 3 times 20 minutes. If there was a tie after regular time, five minutes of extra time were played. The first goal in extra time decided the game for the team that scored the goal. In the event that a winner was still not found after extra time, the game was decided by a shootout .
A win in regular time earned a team 3 points. A win and a defeat after extra time was rewarded with 2 or 1 point. There were no points for a defeat in regular time.

Places 1-6 were automatically qualified for the play-offs . Places 7-10 had to prevail in an additional best-of-3 round, with 7th place against 10th place and 8th place against 9th place. For the semi-finals, the teams that had won four out of a maximum of seven games in the quarter-finals against their opponents qualified. In the semifinals only a maximum of five games were played. The winners of the semifinals made it to the final, while the losers in the small final played for third place. A maximum of five games were also played in the final. Only one game was played in the round for third place. The respective opponents were put together so that the top ranked team plays against the worst, the second best, against the second worst, and so on. As in the main season, a game lasted 3 times 20 minutes. After the regular time, extensions of 20 minutes each were played until a winner was found through a decisive goal.
