Tuomas Sakari Tarkki (born February 28, 1980 in Rauma ) is a former Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who was active for many years at JYP Jyväskylä and Kärpät Oulu in the Finnish (SM) Liiga . With Kärpät he won the Finnish championship twice . His brother Iiro is also an ice hockey goalkeeper , his wife Saija an ice hockey player.

Career

Tarkki laid the foundation for his ice hockey career in Rauman Lukko's youth team .

Tarkki had prepared for promotion to the AHL on the Northern Michigan University ice hockey team , which plays in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . In 2001 Tarkki came to Michigan and has since competed with Craig Kowalski for the position in goal, often leaving Tarkki only on the reserve bench. He owed his breakthrough in 2004 to an injury to Kowalski. Tarkki stepped in and convinced in the play-offs of the CCHA championships and in the Super Six championship. This earned him the role of number one in goal for the 2004/05 season and he played the lion's share of the games. He never had to reach behind him more than three times during any operation and his catch rate was over 90%. This earned him the award for best player of the year. Tarkki was able to set some records this season and brought Northern Michigan University the highest result on points that the team could achieve so far.

Tarkki played from the 2006/07 season to 2010 at Kärpät Oulu in the SM-liiga , after he had spent the 2005/06 season largely in the American Hockey League with the Chicago Wolves , for which he completed 31 games. The other part of the season he guarded the gate for the Gwinnett Gladiators in the ECHL .

In 2010 he switched to MODO Hockey in the Swedish Elitserien , where he performed particularly well in the Kvalserien . In June 2011 he received a contract with Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk from the Continental Hockey League and played there as a goalkeeper for a year. Tarkki then returned to Finland and was a starting goalie at JYP Jyväskylä from 2012 to 2016 . With JYP he reached third place twice in the Finnish Liiga and won the European Trophy in December 2013 .

In 2016 Tarkki moved to the Czech Republic for BK Mladá Boleslav , but could not assert himself there and was therefore temporarily used in the second Czech league at HC Benátky nad Jizerou . Logically, his contract was terminated in December 2016 and Tarkki was initially unemployed. In mid-January 2017, he received a contract with Rungsted Ishockey from the Metal Ligaen until the end of the season and won the Danish cup competition with the Danish club a few weeks later. After the end of the 2016/17 season, he ended his career.
